Curtis Mosley (Chicago, Ill./) made only one field goal in his final game as a Miner Saturday night – but that one successful shot turned out to be the one that put Missouri S&T into the win column.
Mosley's three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining broke a 66-all tie and gave the Miners the lead for good in an eventual
73-66 victory over Missouri-St. Louis at Billy Key Court. The win allowed the Miners to finish their season on a high note as they swept the season series from the Tritons.
The Miners led by as many as 17 early in the second half at 43-26 after a basket by
Marquis Jones (St. Louis, Mo./Cardinal Ritter) and maintained a double-figure lead for the better part of the second half. S&T led 56-42 with 8:18 left after a lay-in by Jones – who scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Miners – but the Tritons turned up the intensity level defensively and started to get back into the game.
Down 61-53 with 4:10 left on the clock, UMSL scored 11 of the next 14 points and tied the score at 64 on a fast break lay-in by Jason Black. The Miners regained the lead with two free throws by Mosley with 1:34 left, but the Tritons tied it back up after getting three offensive rebounds and then a basket from Beaumont Beasley with 1:14 to play.
The Miners worked the ball around on their next possession down the floor and got it to Mosley on the wing. The senior, who had missed all seven of his previous shots, hit nothing but net on this attempt to put his team back in front.
S&T then got a defensive stop and
DeJon Slaughter (Kansas City, Kan./Sumner Academy) sunk two free throws with 25 seconds to play to give the Miners a five-point lead. Then following a turnover by UMSL's Jeremy Brown, Mosley missed two free throws with 20 seconds remaining, but
Casey Noll (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) got the offensive rebound and putback to lock up the win for the Miners.
The Miners got the 24 from Jones and 12 from
Justin Taylor (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) as they finished the season with an overall record of 9-17 and 4-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. S&T also outrebounded the Tritons 38-32 and got 10 from Noll, while Mosley had 11 assists in his final game as a Miner which was one shy of the school's single-game record.
UMSL (14-13, 6-11 GLVC), which had been eliminated from the playoff race earlier in the day when Quincy rallied to beat Drury, was led in scoring by Beasley with 19 points.
