Balanced effort leads S&T past Rockhurst 87-65

Box Score (Kansas City, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners got a balanced scoring effort as 11 different players scored and five of them reached double figures led by freshman Brittany Percival with a career-high 17 in its 87-65 win at Rockhurst University on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Miners (11-10, 5-8 GLVC) got off to a slow start falling behind 5-0 to start the contest. They got on the board thanks to a three from Lauren Dubbert (Madison, Mo./Madison) before eventually taking the lead on a pair of free throws by Sheena Chadwell (Mason, Mich./Mason) at the 11:24 mark.

After a three by the Hawks (9-15, 3-10 GLVC) Ali Fromm gave them the lead, S&T tied it on a layup by Percival and then regained the lead for good on a three by Jenny Dorman (Pella, Iowa/Pella). Rockhurst cut the lead to 15-14 on a pair of free throws by Tori Hartin with 9:52 remaining. From that point the Lady Miners seized control of the game going on a 23-3 run and holding the Hawks to just one field goal in about an eight minute span.

Chadwell got the run started with a jumper and then got back-to-back threes from Jazmine Bell (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) and Perival to stretching the lead to eight. Percival at one point in the run scored seven straight points as S&T built its lead to as many as 21 with just over two minutes to play.

The Hawks finished the half hitting a pair of threes sandwiched around a Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) layup to cut the deficit to 40-23.

After the slow shooting start the Lady Miners heated up to shoot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field and were even better from downtown connecting on 4-of-6. Percival led them with nine points while Bell had seven, Dorman and Tamara McCaskill had five each.

Rockhurst shot only 27 percent (8-for-30) from the floor with half of its field goals coming from behind the arc. Amy Hake and Fromm were the leading scorers for the Hawks with seven and six apiece.

The second half was a track meet between the two teams in the opening five minutes with each side answering bucket-for-bucket. The Lady Miners held serve on their halftime lead never letting it dip lower than 14 and extended the lead to as many as 23 with just under four minutes to play in the contest.

Percival led S&T in scoring and was joined in double figures by Bell and McCaskill with 13 apiece, Katie McElrath (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) had 11 and Dorman finished with 10.

The Lady Miners shot the ball even better in the second half making 64 percent of their attempts (18-for-28) to finish game shooting 33-of 58 (57 percent) and outrebounded the Hawks 39-to-24.

Hake finished with a game-high 19 while Julie Cook had 15 and Fromm dropped in 10.

S&T will be back at home on Tuesday evening to take on future GLVC member Illinois-Springfield beginning at 5:30 p.m.
