Lady Miners ride hot first half to 69-59 win over Missouri-St. Louis

Box Score (St. Louis, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field and were 5-for-11 from downtown in the opening frame in building a 37-20 halftime advantage on it's a way to a 69-59 win over Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday evening at Missouri-St. Louis.

S&T (10-10, 4-8 GLVC) opened the game by scoring the first seven points and building an 11 point lead in the first five minutes of the contest. It opened the game knocking down 7 of its first 12 shots from the floor and got eight points from Lauren Dubbert (Madison, Mo./Madison) in that run.

The Tritons (5-16, 2-10 GLVC) had trouble hanging on to the ball in that stretch turning it over three times and made just 2-of-6 from the field. They got as close as eight but a 9-2 spurt by the Lady Miners stretched the lead to 15 by the 10:29 mark.

The game remained at a double digit advantage for a majority of the half as UMSL got as close as 11 but S&T scored 12 of the final 18 points to head into the locker room with the 17 point edge.

The Lady Miners had a 20-12 advantage on points in the paint and turned 14 Triton turnovers into 12 points and had a 6-0 edge in fast break points. The bench also played a key role for S&T as they outscored UMSLs bench by an 11-2 margin.

Defensively S&T did a great job holding the Tritons to just 30 percent (9-for-30 shooting) from the floor and just 1-of-5 from distance.

UMSL began the second half by scoring the first six points to cut the Lady Miner lead to 11 and held them without a field goal for the first eight minutes but S&T was 6-for-6 at the foul line allowing them to maintain its double digit lead.

The Lady Miners extended their lead back to 17 points on a three by Jenny Dorman (Pella, Iowa/Pella) and lay-up by Katie McElrath (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) at the 10:41 mark. The Tritons continued to scrap and claw and kept the game at about a 10-12 point advantage over the next five plus minutes before S&T pulled away with an 8-0 run covering almost three minutes getting back-to-back three's from Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) and Jazmine Bell (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) about a minute apart stretching its lead to 64-46 with 2:11 to play.

After making just 2-of-15 from the three-point line in the first 39 minutes UMSL caught fire in the final minute making its final three tries to get as close as nine but the Lady Miners made their free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.

Tamara McCaskill and McElrath led S&T with 10 points apiece while Kemp had nine, Dubbert and Dorman finished with eight each. The Lady Miners finished the game with 19 assists led by Kemp and McCaskill with four apiece.

S&T finished the contest shooting almost 44 percent (24-for-55) from the field and were 8-of-20 from downtown and 13-for-18 at the foul line.

The Lady Miners head to Kansas City on Saturday afternoon to take on Rockhurst beginning at 1 p.m.
