Box Score (Quincy, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners shot 49 percent (32-for-65) from the floor and out rebounded Quincy 44-32 but turned the ball over 19 times resulting in 33 points for the 15th ranked Hawks in an
89-81 loss on Thursday evening at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill.
After trading buckets the first three possessions to begin the contest the Lady Miners (12-12, 5-10 GLVC) went on a 13-4 run behind nine points from
Tamara McCaskill and
Lauren Dubbert (Madison, Mo./Madison) taking its largest lead of the night at 21-11. The Hawks (22-3, 14-1 GLVC) began to cut into the lead getting it down to four on a couple of different occasions but each time S&T was able to extend the lead back to eight.
Quincy eventually cut the lead to 31-30 with less than six minutes to play but the Lady Miners were able to maintain their lead thanks to four points from
Lydia Karlefors (Sunderbyn, Sweden/Lulea Basketgymnasium) and three from
Jenny Dorman (Pella, Iowa/Pella). The Hawks tied the game at 38 with 3:35 on a three by Alex Roznowski and then took the lead nearly 0:40 later on another three from Janette Burgin.
Quincy built its lead to as many six before a three pointer by
Brittany Percival (Hartville, Mo./Hartville ) cut the lead to 46-43 at the break.
Each team shot the ball exceptionally well in the frame as both were over 50 percent and made the same number of field goals (18) and threes (4) the difference was Quincy hit six free throws to just three for the Lady Miners. S&T also out rebounded the Hawks 18-13 but QU had the edge in the paint 26-20 and points off turnovers 16-to-11.
McCaskill led all scorers with 14 points as eight different Lady Miner players scored at least three points. Courtney Shuman had 11 to lead the Hawks and Jessica Keller had nine.
The second half opened as a game of runs as S&T opened on a 7-0 run to regain the lead getting five points from
Katie McElrath (Owasso, Okla./Owasso), but the Hawks regained the lead thanks to back-to-back threes from Lindsey Stellflue and Burgin. The Lady Miners answered that run with one of their own to regain a three point lead with 13:43 to go on a three by
Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown). The lead would grow to six on an old fashioned three point play from McCaskill with just over 13 minutes to play.
The Hawks answered right back with another run scoring 10 straight getting five from Stellflue and three from Roznowski to regain a 64-60 lead with 12:02 to play. After a lay-up by Percival cut the deficit to two
Jazmine Bell (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) had an opportunity to tie the game at the line but made just 1-of-2. Stellflue answered right back with another jumper to push the lead back to three but
Maria Bratcher (St. Louis, Mo./Jennings ) hit a driving lay-up and was fouled for a chance at another three point play but she missed the free throw to keep the deficit at 66-65 midway through the frame.
Quincy began to pull away over the next three minutes with yet another long scoring run stretching its lead to 75-65 thanks in large part to six points from Keller and yet another three from Roznowski. S&T got as close as six thanks to a three-pointer by
Kylee Grant (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) but the Hawks put the game away with one final run stretching their lead to as many as 12 with two minutes remaining in the contest.
A three by Bell cut the deficit back to nine with a minute to go but Quincy was able to hit its free throws down the stretch as the S&T went cold down the stretch to get the win.
McCaskill finished with a game-high 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Miners and was joined in double figures by McElrath with 12 and 11. Bell finished with nine and Kemp contributed eight as 10 different players scored in the contest.
Keller led five Hawks in double figures with 21. Stellflue and Shuman finished with 15 apiece while Roznowski dropped in 14 and Burgin had 12.
S&T concludes its three game road trip with a game at Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
