(Quincy, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners gave it a try but were unable to shoot down the high flying 17
th ranked Quincy Hawks in an
89-70 loss on Saturday afternoon at Quincy University.
It was a game of runs through the first seven minutes with each side taking the other's best punch. The Lady Miners (3-2, 1-1 GLVC) trailed 7-6 before proceeding to go on an 8-0 capped by back-to-back three's by Andrea Downs and Jazmine Bell to take a 14-7 lead with 13:30 remaining in the half. That would be their last lead though as the Hawks (9-0, 2-0 GLVC) countered with a 16-0 run spanning nearly five minutes to seize control of the ball game.
S&T cut into the lead at one point getting it down to 23-18 with 7:09 remaining in the frame but Quincy quickly extended back to double digits on a lay-up by Janette Burgin and back-to-back three's by Burgin and Courtney Shuman.
The Hawks extended its lead to 38-24 with less than two minutes to play before the Lady Miners closed to within nine points on a jumper by Hailee Parks with 0:35 remaining in the half. Quincy had one final answer as Sam Poppe hit a jumper just nine seconds later giving the Hawks a 42-31 advantage at the break.
Quincy connected on nearly 55 percent (17-for-31) of its attempts and went 6-of-12 from behind the arc. Burgin and Shuman combined for 18 points and a 70 percent shooting percentage.
After a slow start the Lady Miners heated up shooting the basketball 44 percent (12-for-27). Bell had 11 points to lead S&T while Parks had seven.
The Hawks started the second half out by extending their lead to 17 points in the first five plus minutes before the Lady Miners began to chip away at the lead. S&T got as close as 64-54 on a jumper by Downs with 10:13 remaining in the contest. They had a chance to cut it under 10 points on their next possession but Down's three-point attempt was short and Quincy took advantage on the ensuing trip down the floor as Stephanie Wagner buried a three in the corner igniting an 11-1 run to stretch its lead to 75-55 with just over seven minutes remaining.
The Lady Miners would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way as the Hawks continued their hot shooting from the opening frame by connecting on exactly 50 percent of its shots in the frame to finish the contest shooting 34-of-65 (52.3 percent).
S&T shot nearly 40 percent (23-of-58) from the floor and were able to stay in the game thanks in large part to its free throw shooting as it made 20-of-30 from the charity stripe. The Lady Miners turned the ball over 18 times resulting in 29 points for Quincy.
Bell finished with a career-high 18 points leading S&T in the contest. Julie Meyer had 12 while Downs finished with 11 and Parks contributed 10.
Burgin led all scorers with a game-high 20 points. Jessica Vaughn had 14 while Shuman dropped in 11 and Wagner and Lindsey Stellflue had 10 apiece for the Hawks.
The Lady Miners return home on Wednesday evening beginning a three-game home stand against former MIAA rival Missouri Southern beginning at 7 p.m.
