Lady Miners fall at West Florida 69-62

Box Score (Pensacola, Fla.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners struggled to score down the stretch and it ended up costing them in a 69-62 loss at West Florida on Wednesday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla.

The game started out as a back-and-forth contest in the first eight minutes with both sides trading baskets. The Lady Miners (6-4) retook the lead at 20-18 on a three-pointer by Andrea Downs with 12:05 to play. The Argonauts (9-4) answered right back hitting back-to-back threes which sparked a 10-0 run to give them their largest lead of the half at 28-20 nearly three minutes later.

S&T continued to battle and eventually retook the lead with an 11-0 run of its own sparked by a pair of three's by Chelsea Stangel. UWF kept the game within a point until Brittany Percival buried a three with 1:26 to play to send the Lady Miners into the half with a 36-32 lead.

Both teams shot the ball extremely well in the first half with S&T knocking down 13-of-32 (40.6 percent) from the floor while the Argonauts were even better connecting on 58.3 percent (14-for-24). The Lady Miners controlled the boards with a 19-11 advantage, nine of which were offensive rebounds resulting in 11 second chance points. S&T turned eight West Florida turnovers into 13 points.

Downs led the Lady Miners with nine points in the frame while Percival had seven and Stangel and Hailee Parkshad six apiece.

Tiffany Williams lead the Argonauts with nine points.

S&T started the second half strong building its halftime lead to seven on a jumper by Courtney Kemp three minutes into the frame. It held a five to seven point lead for a majority of the next seven minutes as the Lady Miner defense was tough forcing turnovers and dominating the glass.

West Florida began to make its run at the 8:39 mark on an old-fashioned three-point play by Williams to cut the lead to 53-49. The Argonauts added six more points to take their first lead since late in the first half. The Lady Miners had a couple of opportunities to tie the game from the foul line but made only 2-of-4 at the charity stripe.

Dominique Boykins put UWF back up by three on a lay-up with 5:28 to play; however S&T answered getting five straight points from Percival to regain the lead 59-57 at the 3:07 mark.

Williams convertied another three-point play to give the Argonauts the lead back 60-59 with under three minutes to play.

Jazmine Bell had a chance to give S&T the lead back but only made 1-of-2 at the charity stripe to tie the game back up at 60 all. After a missed three by West Florida, Downs gave the Lady Miners the lead back with a driving lay-up at the 2:04 mark.

It would be their last lead as West Florida scored on the ensuing possession on a three-pointer by Amy Drake.

S&T had a chance to get the lead back but Downs slipped and Bell's pass sailed out of bounds with 1:32 to play.

The Argonauts took advantage of the miscue when Janay McCray scored on a put back with just over a minute to play.

Downs tried to pull the Lady Miners back within one but her jumper was short and West Florida sealed the deal at the foul line going 4-for-4 in the final minute.

S&T struggled to shoot the ball in the second half going 7-for-27 (25.9 percent) from the floor and was just 1-of-9 from behind the three-point arc.

West Florida on the other hand went 14-for-27 (51.9 percent) from the field and were 2-of-6 from downtown.

The Lady Miners outrebounded the Argonauts by a 40-to-27 margin pulling down 19 offensive rebounds compared to four for West Florida.

Downs led S&T with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Percival with 13 and Parks with 12. Downs and Parks were named to the all-tournament team.

Williams led all scorers with 20 points while Sabrina Stambouli finished with 13 and Boykins dropped in 12.

The Lady Miners return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Rockhurst University in a GLVC contest beginning at 3 p.m.
