Box Score (Pensacola, Fla.) – Andrea Downs three-point basket with 4.7 left in regulation tied the game for the Missouri S&T Lady Miners, and it went on to defeat West Alabama
68-67 in overtime on Tuesday afternoon in the West Florida Holiday Classic in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lady Miners (6-3) fell behind 9-0 in the first five minutes and didn't score their first points until a three by Downs with 13:53 remaining. The Tigers (2-10) extended their lead to 13-3 on back-to-back jumpers by Lacey Griffin with just over 13 minutes left in the half.
S&T then went on an 11-0 run taking its first lead of the contest at the 8:26 mark on a jumper by Hailee Parks. Parks had four points in the run. The lead would be short lived as UWA answered back with seven straight of its own to regain the lead at 20-14.
Jazmine Bell got the Lady Miners back within a point at 20-19 with a three point basket, but the Tigers scored four straight at the foul line pushing the lead back to five.
S&T answered that run with one of its own scoring six straight to regain the lead at 25-24 with just under a minute remaining in the opening half. Downs and Parks each scored three points in the run.
West Alabama though would retake the lead by scoring the final four points of the frame to head into the locker room with a 28-25 advantage.
The Lady Miners shot the ball at a 45.5 percent (10-for-22) clip from the floor in the frame and knocked down 4-of-10 from behind the arc. Parks and Downs led S&T in scoring with seven and six points respectively.
Defensively the Lady Miners held the Tigers to just 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from the floor and only 2-for-9 from downtown. The difference in the half was West Alabama was 8-for-8 at the foul line while S&T was just 1-of-3.
The Lady Miners opened the second half on a 10-5 run to gain their biggest advantage of the half at 35-33 on lay-up by Downs with 13:54 to play. The offense struggled after that bucket scoring only three points in a seven minute span despite having several good scoring opportunities.
The offensive drought allowed the Tigers to go on a 13-3 run and build a 46-38 advantage with 6:20 to play. Latashia Greer and Keiara Middleton combined to score all 13 points in the run.
S&T began to chip away at the lead getting back within a pair with an 8-2 run behind six points from Parks with just over 3:08 to play.
West Alabama went back up by four with a pair of free throws after a technical foul was issued to D'Naya Mims (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) at the 2:57 mark. It had a chance to extend the lead even more with a 1-and-1 situation at the line but Middleton missed the front end and S&T got the rebound.
The Lady Miners had missed all 10 of their three-point attempts until Courtney Kemp got one to rattle home with 2:06 left cutting the deficit to a point.
Greer put the Tigers back up by three with a fast break lay-up 0:15 later before a lay-up by Brittany Percival cut it back to a one point game with 1:39 to play.
After a missed three by Griffin, S&T had a chance to regain the lead with 0:50 left but Downs missed a lay-up. It then had another chance when Percival stole the ball near midcourt 11 seconds later but Parks lay-up was blocked by Griffin with 0:28 left and West Alabama had control of the ball.
The Lady Miners were forced to foul sending Jenni Thomley to the line with 0:19 remaining and she hit both free throws to make it 54-51.
After a timeout by the Tigers, the Lady Miners went the length of the floor and got Downs wide open for the game-tying three in front of the S&T bench to force the overtime period.
In the overtime the Lady Miners started strong getting a pair of free throws by Parks and a three-pointer by Downs to build a 59-54 lead a minute and a half into the frame.
The lead remained at five for the next minute before West Alabama cut the lead to 61-59 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Larrenda Rockwell with 2:30 remaining.
Downs hit a lay-up 0:15 later pushing the lead back to four but the Tigers refused to go away getting back within a pair on a Middleton lay-up with 2:01 to play. They had a chance to tie the game at the 1:37 mark but Dakota Powell made only 1-of-2 at the foul line to keep the Lady Miners in front.
Clinging to a 63-62 lead Downs pushed it back to four with her second three-pointer of the overtime period and her fifth in the game with just over a minute left.
West Alabama missed a three with 0:51 left and S&T got the rebound with a chance to seal the win. Downs lay-up attempt was short with 0:22 left and the Tigers came down the floor getting a lay-up from Powell to make it 66-64 with 0:09 left.
West Alabama tried for the steal on the inbounds but was unsuccessful and had to foul Kemp, who went to the foul line and knocked home both free throws with 0:05 left to secure the victory.
Powell made a three at the buzzer for the final margin.
S&T shot 31.4 percent (11-for-35) from the floor in the second half and just 2-of-12 from three. It rebounded though in overtime making 4-of-7 from the floor, both of its three point attempts and went 4-for-4 at the foul line to get its third straight victory.
Downs led three Lady Miners in double figures with 22 points. Parks recorded a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Kemp dropped in 10.
S&T concludes its stay in Florida with a game against West Florida on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m.
