(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped its two game losing streak defeating Westminster
64-49 on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T led wire-to-wire to pick up the victory and won for the second straight time over the Blue Jays.
The game got off to a rugged start as neither team scored a point in the first 2:30 minutes of the ball game. Katelyn Heil got the Lady Miners (4-3) on the board with a three-pointer at the 17:33 mark. They led by as many as seven early before Westminster (3-5) began to chip away eventually getting to within 13-10 on a jumper by Markie England with 9:00 to play.
S&T got back-to-back threes by Andrea Downs and Courtney Kemp sparking a 12-2 run that was capped off by a fast-break lay-up by Jazmine Bell which made it 25-12 with less than five minutes to play.
The Blue Jays got to within 10 on a three by Rachel Backes, but the Lady Miners scored three of the final five points of the half to head into the locker room with a 28-17.
Neither team shot the ball particular well in the frame as S&T shot 38.5 percent (10-for-26) from the floor and Westminster was only 8-for-23 (34.8 percent). The two teams combined for 26 turnovers in the frame. The difference was the Lady Miners knocked down four treys in the stanza compared to just one for the Blue Jays and went to the foul line eight times compared to zero trips for Westminster.
Hailee Parks had eight points in the frame to lead all scorers. England had six to lead Westminster.
The Blue Jays opened the second half strong going on a 12-5 run including the first seven points to get within 31-29 not quite 3:30 into the stanza. That would be the closest they would get though as S&T slowly began to pull away building a 10 point lead on a jumper by Chelsea Stangel with 11:23 left to play.
Westminster got back to within 43-37 on back-to-back lay-ups by Kenna Cornelson and Alex Kennedy a little over a minute later. The Lady Miners quickly responded by scoring nine of the next 11 points extending its lead back to double digits at 51-39 with 7:31 to play.
Backes got the Jays back to within nine points on lay-up, before S&T put the game away with a pair of free throws by Brittany Percival and a four point play by Heil pushing the lead to 58-43.
The lead eventually grew to 62-45 with less than three to play and would not get lower than 15 the rest of the way.
After each team's struggles shooting the ball in the first half, they each warmed up in the second stanza each making about 50 percent of their shots. The Blue Jays shot 52.2 percent (12-for-23) while the Lady Miners were 12-for-25 (48 percent).
Heil and Backes and answered each other point-for-point in the stanza to pace each other's respective offenses.
S&T converted 29 Westminster turnovers into 31 points and its bench outscored the Blue Jays by a 36-to-12 margin.
Heil led three Lady Miner players in double figures with 13 points, 10 after halftime. Downs and Parks had 10 apiece while Julie Meyer finished with nine.
Backes finished with a game-high 15 points leading Westminster while England finished with 12 and Cornelson dropped in eight.
S&T plays its final game before the Christmas break when it hosts Arkansas-Fort Smith in a non-conference game on Monday, December 21 beginning at 7 p.m.
