(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners fell in its season finale to Bellarmine University
3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 18-25, 25-27) on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
In the opening set the Lady Miners (10-27, 5-9 GLVC) played one of their best sets all season hitting nearly 40 percent in the frame and committed just two errors while recording 11 kills in 23 chances to take it 25-19. Julie Meyer, Erin Bekebrede and Lynsey Jorgensen combined for nine of those kills and had a combined hitting percentage of 57.1 percent in the stanza. S&T was also able to capitalize on six Bellarmine (14-9, 7-7 GLVC) errors.
S&T continued its strong performance into the start of the second set as it scored the first four points including three off of service aces by Bridget Williams. The Knights evened it up with four straight, but the Lady Miners retook the lead on a kill by Samantha Klump and a service ace by Danielle Kracl.
Bellarmine proceeded to run off the next six points to take the lead then extended the lead to 15-7 as part of an 11-1 run. S&T began to chip away at the deficit getting to within 19-17 on a kill from Kit Spears but would get no closer as the Knights scored six of the final eight points to take the set 25-19 and square the match at 1-1.
The third set was back-and-forth between the two sides through the first eight points before Bellarmine once again went on a run to take the lead at 9-6. Its lead grew to 16-9 before the Lady Miners began to climb back into the set getting within 17-14 as part of a 5-1 run fueled by Meyer and Jorgensen, who accounted for three of the five points.
The Knights pushed the lead back to six at 20-14 before S&T answered back with three straight points of its own to get back within 20-17. However, like the second set the Lady Miners could get no closer than that as Bellarmine closed the set on a 5-1 run to take the set 25-18 and a 2-1 lead.
The Knights led for most of the fourth set but they made 12 errors in the set allowing S&T to hang around. Bellarmine led 17-12 before the Lady Miners surged into a tie with an 8-3 run behind the play of Kaci Herron's two kills and a kill each from Klump and Meyer. S&T also took advantage of four Knight's errors in the process.
Bellarmine scored the next two points to regain the lead and eventually got to match point on a kill from Emily Beckman to make it 24-21. The Lady Miners rose to the challenge scoring four straight points and took its first lead since early in the set on a kill by Spears to set up set point and try and force a fifth game.
It wasn't meant to be though as the Knights scored the final three points of the match to take it 27-25.
Beckman and Whitney Tormoehlen combined for 33 of Bellarmine's 52 kills to lead the Knights offense as they finished the contest hitting at a 20 percent clip.
Meyer, Bekebrede, Klump and Jorgenson accounted for 35 of S&T's 43 kills in the match as the Lady Miners hit almost 12 percent for the day.
S&T finished its season with 10 wins reaching double figure win totals for the first time in the program's three year history.
