The opening set was tight early on as it was tied four times in the first 18 points before William Woods (26-6) went on a 13-4 run midway through to take its biggest lead of the set at 22-13. The Lady Miners (10-25) would cut it to eight on a service error, but the Owls scored the final three points of the frame to take the set 25-14.
WWU hit 38.7 percent in the opening stanza recording 13 kills against one error while S&T had eight kills in 29 chances.
S&T got off to a good start in the second set by scoring four of the first five points to take the early lead. After that the Owls responded with a 10-2 run to take an 11-6 advantage. The Lady Miners cut into the lead and eventually regained the lead as part of a 9-3 surge at 15-14. The game would remain tight until 17 all when William Woods went on a 7-0 run to get to set point. Samantha Klump helped S&T stave off one set point but couldn't fight off any more as Brianna Rodriquez hammered home a kill on the next point for the 25-18 win.
The Owls continued their strong hitting by recording 16 kills in 38 chances for a 29 percent hitting percentage while the Lady Miner offense continued their struggles with just nine kills.
The third set was close for the first 22 points as neither side had more than a two point lead. S&T began to push through scoring seven of the next 10 points for an 18-14 lead. William Woods cut it to 18-16 but the Lady Miners finished strong closing the set on a 7-1 run behind three kills from Julie Meyer to win 25-17 and force a fourth set.
The Lady Miners had their best offensive set of the night in the third hitting 23.5 percent while holding the Owl offense to a .000 hitting percentage. Meyer finished the set with seven kills and had one and a half blocks to lead S&T.
The fourth set was all William Woods as it raced out to an early 7-0 lead and eventually led by as many as 10 points on six different occasions in the stanza. The Lady Miners began to rally late closing within 23-17 on a kill from Erin Bekebrede but an attack error by Jennifer Costello set up match point for the Owls. After a service error by Rodriquez made it 24-18, Bekebrede reeled off four straight points including a service ace to cut it to 24-22. She almost recorded another service ace that would have cut the lead to one but instead it went a little long ending the match at 25-22.
William Woods finished the match hitting 20.9 percent with 49 kills in 148 chances. After its slow start the Lady Miner offense warmed up recording 26 kills in the final two sets to finish the match with 43 kills.
Meyer and Bekebrede had 17 and 11 kills respectively to lead the Lady Miners. Bridget Williams finished with a team-high 20 digs.
