(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners picked up its second straight win to open the 2009-10 season with a 68-62 victory over Wayne State (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
The Lady Miners (2-0) got off to better start than they did on Friday and the results showed it as they opened up a 16-8 lead seven minutes into the contest. The freshmen duo of Hailee Parks and Katelyn Heil combined to score 11 of those first 16 points. The Warriors (0-3) were able to hang around in the contest thanks to the three-point shooting of Brooke Bowers and Chelsea Kouri.
Kouri's three-pointer at the 9:36 mark tied the game up at 18 all capping off a 10-2 WSU run. S&T quickly responded though with a 10-2 run of its own behind the play of Julie Meyer who had four points in the run. Andrea Downs, Courtney Kemp and D'Naya Mims chipped in with two points apiece in the spurt regaining a 26-18 lead.
Wayne State continued to hang around and eventually took a 31-30 lead on a jumper from Chelsea Davis with less than a minute to play. That jumper capped an 11-2 run as Bowers and Davis scored all of the points including three straight three-pointers during the stretch.
The lead would be short lived though as Heil quickly gave the Lady Miners the lead back at 33-31 with her second three of the half with 0:33 left. The Warriors had two final cracks in the final 0:10 but Bowers three was off the mark and Amelia Davis's put back off the miss was also off target sending S&T into the break with the two point advantage.
The Lady Miners shot the ball at a 37.5 clip (12-for-32) in the frame but were just 3-of-11 from downtown. They shot the ball well at the foul line though going 6-for-7 and did outrebound Wayne State 25-to-16. The Warriors were 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) from behind the arc but converted on only 5 of its 20 attempts inside the arc (25 percent).
Parks and Heil led S&T with eight points apiece while Bowers, Davis and Kouri combined for 21 of WSU's 31 points.
The Lady Miners came out of the gates quick to start the second half building a nine point lead 3:17 into the frame. The Warriors were able to once again fight back to within 40-38 behind four points from C. Davis and Bowers at the 13:17 mark.
Chelsea Stangel silenced that run with a three of her own sparking S&T to seven straight points in the next minute to regain a nine point edge.
Bowers continued to keep Wayne State close with another three, but the Lady Miners went on a 10-3 over the next six minutes building its largest lead of the game at 57-44. Fareedah Washington led that charge with four points in the run while Kemp and Mims each made a pair of free throws and Parks capped it off with a lay-up.
The Warriors refused to die however and cutting the lead to six points on back-to-back three's from Kouri and a free throw by C. Davis with 4:11 to play.
Mims put the Lady Miners back up 60-51 with a jumper and a free throw with 2:35 to play before Kouri hit yet another three cutting the margin back to six points. They wouldn't get closer than five the rest of the way as S&T closed the game strong eventually building its lead back to 10 points on a pair of Mims free throws with 0:48 remaining.
Wayne State made one final push scoring five points in 0:35 before Stangel went to the line and made 1-of-2 with 0:09 left to seal the deal.
The Lady Miners shot the ball better in the second half connecting on 43 percent (9-for-21) but still struggled from behind the arc connecting on only 2-of-7. They were able to do their damage at the foul line though knocking home 15-of-19 and finished the contest converting on 21-of-26 (81 percent) at the charity stripe.
The Warriors on the other hand continued their hot shooting from the outside making 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) but continued to have problems on the inside and at the foul line as they were 6-for-21 inside the arc and shot just 40 percent at the line (4-of-10).
Parks led three S&T players in double figures with 16 points. Heil dropped in 11 more while Mims recorded her first double-double as a Lady Miner with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
