(Evansville, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner volleyball squad was swept at Southern Indiana
3-0 (24-26, 10-25, 19-25) on Saturday afternoon in Evansville, Ind.
The Lady Miners dug (10-24, 5-7 GLVC) dug themselves an early hole in the opening set falling behind 7-1 early. They began to whittle away at the lead eventually getting within a point at 20-19. The Screaming Eagles (15-13, 7-5 GLVC) extended their lead back to a pair on kill by Courtney Bealor to make it 22-20. S&T fought back to tie at 23 all on a service by Bridget Williams. Brittani Oliver gave USI the lead back at 24-23 with a kill, but Samantha Klump tied it back up at 24-24 with a kill of her own. Danielle LaGrange and Oliver though scored the final two points with kills to take the set 26-24.
The Screaming Eagles hit .289 percent in the frame and had 15 kills led by Oliver with six. The Lady Miners recorded 13 kills and were led by Klump with four and Julie Meyer and Kit Spears with three each. As a team S&T hit .152 in the stanza.
After an early 1-1 tie the second set as all Southern Indiana as it went on a 15-2 run to build a 16-3 advantage. At one stretch during the run it took advantage of seven Lady Miner errors. S&T would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the frame as the Screaming Eagles won 25-10.
USI had 10 kills in 17 chances to hit 47 percent in the frame while the Lady Miners had only six kills in 27 chances.
S&T got off to a great start in the third set scoring five of the first six points before the Screaming Eagles went on an 8-3 run to take the lead for good. They stretched their lead to 20-12 before the Lady Miners got back to within 20-15 on a pair of kills by Meyer. USI extended the lead back to six at 22-16 before S&T again cut it down to 22-19; however, it would get no closer as USI scored the final three points to win 25-19.
The Screaming Eagles had 34 kills led by LaGrange with 11 and Oliver finished with nine and hit 26.4 percent for the match.
The Lady Miners on the other hand had 29 kills but committed 25 errors in the match and were led by Meyer with her 16th double-double of the year with 11 kills and 11 digs.
S&T returns home to play its final three home matches of the season, beginning next Tuesday evening with William Woods at 7 p.m.
