Lady Miners drop pair in Arkansas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Searcy, Ark.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were swept in a pair of matches in Searcy, Ark., on Saturday afternoon. S&T lost 3-0 (18-25, 16-25 and 16-25) to Arkansas-Fort Smith and 3-0 to Harding (17-25, 22-25 and 18-25).

The Lady Miner (9-23) offense struggled in both games recording a combined 52 kills in 217 chances while allowing the Lions (28-3) and Bison to hit .396 and .252 respectively.

Against Arkansas-Fort Smith, the Lions hit above 40 percent in each of the first two sets as they led pretty much throughout the match. The S&T defense had no answer for Heidi Luks, who had 12 kills against one error in 17 chances.

Erin Bekebrede led the Lady Miners with seven kills while Bridget Williams finished with 13 digs.

In the second match against Harding the S&T offense recorded only seven kills while hitting only .125 while the Bison had 18 kills against six errors as they broke open an 8-8 tie scoring seven of the next eight points en route to the 25-17 win.

The second frame saw 13 ties and nine lead changes as S&T hit nearly 20 percent while limiting Harding to .100 but the Bison had three more kills and scored the last three points of the stanza to take the set 25-22 and a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Miners got off to a hot start in the third frame racing out to an early 5-1 before Harding regrouped with five straight of its own to take a 6-5 advantage. It would remain close until 9-8 when the Bison again went on an extended run by scoring of seven of the eight points to open a 16-9 lead. S&T would get no closer than five points the rest of the way as Harding got back-to-back kills from Sarah Phipps to end the match.

Samantha Klump led the Lady Miners with 10 kills in the contest while Williams and Bekebrede dug 15 and 12 balls up respectively.

S&T returns to action next Friday evening traveling to Owensboro, Ky., to take on Kentucky Wesleyan beginning at 7 p.m.
