10/18/2009 12:49:35 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Lansing, Mich.) – It was a tale of two matches for the Missouri S&T Lady Miners as it lost a five set match in its opener 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 26-28, 10-15) to Ohio Dominican then won a five setter over Lake Superior State (Mich.) 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 16-14) on Saturday at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament on Saturday in Lansing, Mich.

In the opener against Ohio Dominican (15-13) the Lady Miners (9-20) got off to a slow start allowing the Panther offense to hit 32.4 percent recording 14 kills against only three errors in 34 total chances. S&T's offense also recorded 14 kills but committed five more errors in nine more chances and hit only 14 percent.

The Lady Miners picked it up in the next two sets as they recorded 28 kills in 70 chances while holding the ODU offense to just a .002 hitting percentage to pull out a pair of close 25-23 set wins. Julie Meyer and Erin Bekebrede combined for 17 kills in the two sets as S&T took the 2-1 advantage.

The Lady Miners led for most of game four building a 14-9 lead midway through before Ohio Dominican began to chip away at the lead tying it at 16 all on a service ace by Elyse Mongillo. The set went back and forth over the next 10 points with each side answering each other point for point. With the score 21-20 in favor of S&T, it allowed Ohio Dominican to run off the next three points to take its first lead of the set at 23-21. The Panthers got to set point on a service error by Meyer before the Lady Miners responded with the next two points on a block by Katie Herington and a kill from Samantha Klump to tie it back up.

An attack error by Bekebrede gave Ohio Dominican the lead back at 25-24, but Klump tied it back up with a kill at 25-25 all. The Panthers regained the lead on another attack error by S&T, but once again the Lady Miners tied it back up with a kill from Jennifer Costello. Ohio Dominican forced the fifth set by taking advantage of a set error and an attack error for the 28-26 win.

The fifth set was pretty much all Panthers as they raced out to a 5-1 lead before S&T got back within 7-6. Three straight errors by the Lady Miners gave ODU a 10-6 lead. S&T would get no closer than two the rest of the way as the Panthers finished the set off scoring five of the final nine points to take the set 15-10 and win the match.

Ohio Dominican hit 28.6 percent in the final stanza and held the Lady Miners to just a .077 percent with only five kills against four errors in 13 chances.

Meyer and Bekebrede led the way for S&T with 21 and 16 kills respectively. Costello and Danielle Kracl had 51 of the 59 set assists while Bridget Williams had 14 digs.

Rachel Billing, Kristy Birkemeier and Shannon Nadler combined for 32 of the Panthers 47 kills in the match. Cassie Schroeder had 28 set assists while Stacy Rogg dug 12 balls off the floor.

Lady Miners-Lake Superior State match

In the second match against Lake Superior State (3-19) the Lady Miners hit nearly 23 percent and recorded 25 kills in the first set two sets and were never seriously challenged in breezing to 25-18 and 25-20 victories.

In the third set the Laker offense recorded 13 kills and hit 32.3 percent in the set while taking advantage of seven S&T errors to get back in the match with a 25-20 win and force the fourth set.

LSSU led for nearly all of the fourth set and led by as many as five at 14-9. The Lady Miners would get within a pair on three different occasions but each time the Lakers had a run to push the lead back out. S&T was down four set points at 24-20 before trying to rally back on an attack error by Samantha Gibbs and a kill by Meyer but the rally came up short as Meyer's next attack attempt went long giving Lake Superior State the 25-22 win and forced the fifth set.

In the final set the two sides traded points through the first 10 points and were tied at 5 before the Lady Miners began to pull away with a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead. The Lakers would get within 12-10 on an attack error by Meyer, but she responded with a kill then Kit Spears and Lynsey Jorgensen combined for a block setting up match point. Things would get interesting as Lake Superior proceeded to run off four straight points on kills from Sarah Hess and Brittney Newberry tying the set up at 14 all. S&T though answered the charge by scoring the final two points on back-to-back attack errors by the Lakers to win the set 16-14 and the set 3-2.

Meyer and Klump each recorded career-highs in kills. Meyer had 22 while Klump had 19. Costello and Kracl again combined for 51 set assists while Meyer recorded yet another double-double with her 19 digs.

Nikke Stratelak and Gibbs had 15 and 10 kills respectively to lead Lake Superior State.

The Lady Miners return home for a conference match against Missouri-St. Louis on Tuesday evening at the Bullman Multipurpose Building beginning at 7 p.m.
