Volleyball rallies to defeat Drury 3-2

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied from a 2-1 deficit winning the last two sets to defeat Drury 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 25-15 and 15-12) on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T got a strong offensive performance from the trio of Julie Meyer, Samantha Klump and Erin Bekebrede who combined for 43 of the team's 64 kills.

In the opening set the Lady Miners (8-17, 4-5 GLVC) outhit the Panthers (12-8, 4-4 GLVC) by a .333-to-.212 clip and knocked home 18 kills compared to just 11 for Drury. S&T held an 11-9 lead before Drury scored three straight points to take its first lead at 12-11. The Lady Miners responded with a 5-0 run of their own to regain the lead.

The Panthers battled back to tie it up at 18 all, and then retook the lead at 20-19 on a service ace by Katrina Westhoff. S&T responded with kills by Bekebrede and Klump regaining a 21-20 advantage. Drury tied it back up at 21 on a kill by Krystal Glessner. The Lady Miners regained the lead on an attack error by Glessner at 22-21, but Kayla Hellebusch knotted it back up at 22 all with a kill. S&T was able to close out the set with three straight kills by Bekebrede and Meyer to win the set 25-22.

The second stanza was a game of runs as the Lady Miners fell behind early before rallying to take a 6-4 lead. Drury ran off the next four points then S&T answered back running off five straight to take an 11-8 lead. The Panthers tied it up at 12 all on a kill by Hellebusch, before the Lady Miners scored four of the next five points to take a 16-13 lead. They held a 21-19 advantage before Drury ran off four straight points to take a 23-21 lead. Bekebrede caught S&T back within a point but Kyrie Hopkins recorded a kill and Hallie Freeborg served the set out with a service ace for the 25-22 win.

The third set was all Panthers as they got an early lead and never relinquished it leading by as many as six on seven different occasions and never allowed S&T to get back within four points at any stretch en route to the 25-19 win. Drury hit almost 46 percent in the frame recording 20 kills against three errors while the Lady Miners hit nearly 30 percent but had only 14 kills and two attack errors.

The fourth frame opened with seven ties and two lead changes and was tied at 9 all before S&T went on a 6-0 run behind the play of Bekebrede and Kit Spears who accounted for four of the six points in the spurt. The Panthers got as close as three at 16-13 before the Lady Miners put the set away with an 8-1 run. S&T took advantage of four Drury attack errors and Klump had three straight service aces late in the run to set up set point. Katie Herington forced the fifth set with a kill to win it 25-15.

The Lady Miner offense hit .257 percent in the stanza while the defense held the Panther attack to just a .048 hitting percentage in the set. S&T had 12 kills and only three errors opposed to Drury's nine kills and seven errors.

The Panthers scored the opening two points of the final set before the Lady Miners ran off four straight to take the lead. Drury tied it up at four before S&T scored three of the next four points to regain the lead at 7-5. The Panthers tied it back up at 7-7 on a kill by Hopkins and an attack error by Kaci Herron. Drury though gave the Lady Miners the lead back on a service error heading into the changeover. They extended the lead to 10-8 on a kill by Meyer; however Drury scored the next three points to regain an 11-10 lead and forced S&T to take a timeout. The timeout worked to its advantage as the Panthers committed three errors and Bridget Williams had a service ace to set up match point for the Lady Miners at 14-11. Drury stayed alive on a kill by Ali Rook, but Klump won it for S&T on the next point recording her 13th kill giving the Lady Miners the 15-12 victory and complete the rally.

The match was evenly played throughout as there were 30 ties and 14 lead changes. The Lady Miners finished the contest hitting nearly 21 percent while the Panthers were held to 19.1 percent. S&T committed four more errors than Drury but registered seven more kills and had one more attack attempt. Each side finished the match with nine blocks.

Meyer recorded a match-high in kills with 16 and finished with 13 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Bekebrede matched her career-high with 14 kills while Klump was one short of her career-high finishing with 13 kills. Herington finished the match with eight kills. Danielle Kracl led the way with 32 set assists and Williams had a match-high 24 digs.

Rook led three Panthers in double figures with 14 kills. She was joined by Hopkins with 12 and Glessner had 10. Austin Warren finished led all players with 47 set assists while Freeborg led Drury with 15 digs.

The Lady Miners return to action on Tuesday evening when they host the fourth ranked Central Missouri Jennies beginning at 7 p.m.
