DES MOINES, Iowa – On a chilly afternoon in central Iowa, Missouri S&T's offense was stopped cold by Drake University as the Miners were shut out for the second time in three weeks in a
19-0 loss to the Bulldogs.
The Miners' defense held the Bulldogs to a touchdown and four field goals on the afternoon, but the offense managed only 120 yards of total offense on the 35-degree afternoon – its lowest production in a game since posting that same number of yards in a Sept. 22, 2001 loss at Truman State – as it fell to 0-6 on the season.
The host Bulldogs, who improved to 4-1 on the year, drove the Miners' four-yard line on their opening possession, but
Steve Edwards (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) forced a fumble on Trey Morse that
Terry Robinson (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer South-Berkeley) recovered to halt that drive.
But after the Miners were forced to punt, the Bulldogs put together a 34-yard scoring drive that ended in the first of the four field goals by Brandon Wubs of 36 yards to give Drake a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
S&T drove into Drake territory for the first time in the second quarter when quarterback
Steve Watson (Berkeley, Ill./Walther Lutheran) – getting the start for the injured
Jason Schlueter (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) – completed a third down pass to
David Kavish (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin). However, that would turn out to be the only time the Miners would cross midfield in the opening half.
Drake added to its lead on its only touchdown drive of the afternoon that ended with Stephen Platek's one-yard run with 1:17 left in the half, then a fumble early in S&T's ensuing possession led to a 33-yard field goal by Wubs as the half ended.
Wubs connected on field goals on each of Drake's first two possessions of the second half, the first from 45 yards and the other from 29 to complete the scoring.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs continued to keep the Miner offense in check, as S&T ran a total of seven plays from scrimmage on the Drake side of the 50-yard line and ended up punting 12 times.
Curterris Golden (Chicago, Ill./John Hope) led the Miners on the ground with 38 yards on 12 carries, while Watson completed 10-of-25 passes for 60 yards.
Bryan Crider (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) and Marterricus Thomas had three catches apiece for S&T.
Robinson led the Miner defense with nine tackles while Edwards finished with eight. Drake finished the game with 458 yards of total offense, but the Miners stopped three Bulldog drives inside the S&T 10-yard line without points, one on the fumble forced by Edwards and another when
Justin Philpy (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) and
Loren Severs (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) stopped quarterback Mike Piatkowski for no gain on a fourth-and-one at the S&T five.
The Miners won the turnover battle, recovering three of the four Drake fumbles while only having one themselves.
Missouri S&T will return home for its next three contests, beginning next Saturday when it hosts Northwestern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
