Big games from senior guard
Curtis Mosley (Chicago, Ill./) and junior forward
Adam Knollmeyer (Linn, Mo./Linn) led the Missouri S&T men's basketball team to a
72-62 victory Saturday over Indianapolis, the Miners' second straight win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Mosley, who recorded his first career double-double Thursday in S&T's win over Saint Joseph's, followed that effort with a career-high 24-point performance Saturday. He was assisted as Knollmeyer posted a double-double of his own Saturday with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The Miners (7-8, 2-5 GLVC) built two double figure leads in the first half, going up 15-5 to start the game and then 29-17 after the Greyhounds had wiped out the first 10-point lead. Indianapolis proceeded to overcome the second deficit as well before the half ended, scoring the last nine points of the period to take a 32-30 lead to the locker room.
Indianapolis (6-11, 1-7 GLVC) maintained the lead for the first six-plus minutes of the second half, but the Miners used a 9-0 surge of their own to take the lead back. Casey Noll's jumper out of the corner gave S&T a 41-40 lead with 13:47 remaining.
UIndy bounced back and regained the lead on a three-point play by Sergey Struck at the 11:17 mark, but a three-point play by Knollmeyer 45 seconds later put the Miners back in front – this time for good – at 46-45.
Knollmeyer's three-point play started a 9-1 run for the Miners, as
Marquis Jones (St. Louis, Mo./Cardinal Ritter) drilled a three-pointer and Mosley finished a fast break with a lay-in to put S&T up 52-46 with 8:54 to go.
The Greyhounds were able to knock that lead down to one on a basket by Devin Williams with 6:53 on the clock, but the Miners answered that challenge by pushing the lead back to 11 over the next four minutes with a another 9-0 run after UIndy cut the lead to two.
The Miners, who wrapped up the win by making seven-of-nine at the free throw line in the final 2:43, shot 45.3 percent for the game and held the Greyhounds to 37.7 percent – including a 4-of-21 showing from three-point range. S&T also held a huge advantage on the boards as it outrebounded UIndy 48-27.
Jones also reached double figures for the Miners with 13 points. Mosley also finished the afternoon with six rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Miners recorded back-to-back wins in conference play for the first time since Jan. 12-15, 2005, when S&T beat Southwest Baptist and Missouri Western in succession while it was still a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Missouri S&T will return to action Thursday against 18th-ranked Northern Kentucky in Highland Heights, Ky. The Norse rallied for a 91-86 overtime win Saturday at Drury.
