Box Score Rolla, Mo. - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped a three game losing skid with a
75-58 victory over Saint Joseph's on Thursday evening at Billy Key Court. The Lady Miners shot the ball at a 47 percent clip for the game (31-of-66) and had three players in double figures led by
Tamara McCaskill with 20.
Brittany Percival (Hartville, Mo./Hartville ) and
Jenny Dorman (Pella, Iowa/Pella) finished with 10 each.
S&T (8-6, 2-4 GLVC) scored the first four points of the contest before Saint Joseph's (0-15, 0-7 GLVC) Michelle Kiger came off the bench to hit a trio of three's in a span of two minutes to give the Pumas a 13-8 advantage. After a McCaskill bucket cut the lead to three, the Pumas proceeded to score the next four points to build its largest lead of the night at 17-10 at the 13:59 mark.
The Lady Miners got a spark off the bench from the freshmen trio of Percival,
Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) and
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) starting a 21-2 run. Percival's three from the wing got the run going then after Kiger hit a jumper to push the lead back to six S&T tightened the screws defensively not allowing another SJC point until 0:02 remained in the half.
After a lay-up by Percival tied the game at 19 all, S&T regained the lead for good on a jumper by Kemp at the 8:31 mark. It would build its lead to as many as 12 behind eight straight points from McCaskill in the final 5:21 of the half. Erica Blythe's jumper though right before the break cut the lead to 31-21.
As a team S&T shot 39 percent (14-of-36) from the floor while outrebounding the Pumas by a 29-14 margin and outscoring them in the paint 20-2. Saint Joseph's started the half knocking down 6-of-9 from the floor but was just 2-for-18 the rest of the way.
After another bucket by McCaskill pushed the lead back to 12 starting the second half SJC scored six straight to get it down to six. A three-pointer by
Lauren Dubbert (Madison, Mo./Madison) sparked a 9-4 spurt pushing the lead back to double digits and it didn't dip below nine the rest of the way.
S&T built its lead to as many as 20 on a free-throw by Percival at the 7:50 mark and were able to keep it around that margin the rest of the way shooting 57 percent (17-for-30) in the frame getting 10 points from Dorman and eight from
Katie McElrath (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) to lead the way.
The Lady Miners return to action on Saturday afternoon hosting Indianapolis beginning at 1 p.m. at Billy Key Court.
