Somers, Wis. – On a cold Saturday afternoon in Somers, Wis. the Missouri S&T Lady Miners were unable to overcome its frigid shooting in a
63-54 loss at Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Lady Miners (7-6, 1-4 GLVC) got off to a great start racing out to an early 19-8 lead behind the impressive play of
Jazmine Bell (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid), who scored nine points in the run, in the opening 10 minutes. S&T played solid defense in that opening run before the Rangers (10-4, 6-0 GLVC) started to find their offensive rhythm and went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 19-18.
After a jumper by
Sheena Chadwell (Mason, Mich./Mason) put S&T back up three, Wisconsin-Parkside tied it on a three pointer by Jadee Rodney. Lauren Dubbert's lay-up gave the Lady Miners the lead right back before Rooney and Amanda Gibson combined to score seven of Parkside's final nine points of the frame and closed the half on a 9-1 spurt to head into the locker room with a 30-26 lead.
UW-Parkside shot the ball extremely well in the frame making 67 percent (14-for-21) from the floor and were led in scoring by Rooney and Gibson with eight apiece. The Rangers held a 16-7 advantage on the glass while S&T hit just 9-of-25 (36 percent) from the field. Bell had nine and
Tamara McCaskill dropped in seven.
McCaskill hit the first shot of the second half for the Lady Miners to cut the deficit to two before Parkside extended the lead to nine four minutes in. S&T made only 1-of-9 from the field to open the second half but the Rangers were almost as cold making just 25 percent (3-of-12) from the floor.
The Lady Miners began to chip away at the lead and eventually retook the lead on a lay-up by
Brittany Percival (Hartville, Mo./Hartville ) as part of a 13-2 run with 8:46 remaining. They had a chance to push the lead to four but Dubbert missed a little runner and then Rooney came down and hit a three from the top of the key to give UW-Parkside the lead back for good. After another Parkside bucket pushed the lead back to three before
Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead back to one.
But down the stretch it was too much Rooney as she hit a pair of threes from identically the same spot to extend the lead back to nine at 52-43 with just under five minutes to play. S&T got to within five before Denise Mannella scored four straight points to extend the margin back to nine.
The Lady Miners made one final push cutting the deficit to 58-54 with a little over a minute to play on an old-fashion three point play. Gibson made 1-of-2 at the foul line with a minute to play.
McCaskill tried to pull S&T closer but her three-pointer was short and then the Rangers hit their final four final shots to hold on for the win and extend their school record winning streak to 10.
The Lady Miners did a better job hanging on to the basketball turning it over just 11 times but shot only 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the floor and were just 4-for-12 from behind the arc. McCaskill finished with 16 and was joined in double figures by Bell with 13.
Parkside shot the ball at a 52 percent clip (23-of-44) from the floor and were 6-of-14 from the three point line. Rooney scored a game-high 20 points connecting on all six of the Rangers three pointers. Gibson, the leading scorer in the GLVC, added 16 while Brittany Beyer dropped in 11.
S&T returns home for a brief two game homestand beginning Thursday night against Saint Joseph's College starting at 5:30 p.m.
