Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners pulled out a five set thriller over Wisconsin-Parkside,
3-2 (25-5, 23-25, 25-23, 15-25 and 18-26) on Friday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building in Rolla.
The Lady Miners (5-16, 3-8 GLVC) got eight kills and took advantage of 11 Ranger (6-14, 2-9 GLVC) errors on their way to an easy 25-5 win in the first set. S&T used a 19-2 run to break it open early and cruise to the victory. S&T hit an impressive .350 percent (8k/1e/20ta) in the set/
In the second set UWP turned the tables rallying from a 17-12 deficit to win 25-23 and tie the match at 1-1. Each side had 11 kills in the set but the Rangers committed three fewer errors in what turned out to be the difference. S&T was able to stave off two set points getting within 24-23 but a block by Tami Gleason gave the set to Wisconsin-Parkside.
The third game was back-and-forth with 14 ties and six lead changes. The Lady Miners took advantage of couple of attack errors by Parkside with the match tied at 22-22 to set up set point. The Rangers staved off the first one courtesy of a service error by S&T, but returned the favor with a service error of their own giving the Lady Miners a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead.
The fourth game was all UWP as it raced out to an early 8-1 lead eventually leading by as many as 14 points before S&T cut the lead to 24-15 but couldn't get any closer as Gleason recorded a kill on the third set point to set up a fifth and deciding game. Gleason finished the set with four solo blocks and three kills. The Rangers had 12 kills compared to just five for the Lady Miners.
In the deciding set Wisconsin-Parkside got out to an early 4-2 lead but S&T answered back with three straight points to retake the lead. The two sides swapped points before the Rangers got two straight points to take an 8-6 lead at the changeover. They added another point to their lead before the Lady Miners scored three straight points thanks to a pair of kills by Tory Smiley to tie the set up at 9-9. Parkside regained the lead with a kill on the next point but S&T stormed back with three straight points to retake the lead at 12-10 and force a timeout by UWP.
The Rangers responded coming out of the break with back-to-back points to tie the set but gave one of those points back on another service error. After another tie,
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) set up match point for the Lady Miners with a kill but Parkside refused to go quitely getting a kill from Addie Kramer to tie the match up again at 14-14. S&T got another match point off another kill from Meyer but once again Kramer tied the set back up with a kill.
The Lady Miners took advantage of another error by the Rangers to set up their third match point but once again a Parkside kill extended the set. S&T got its fourth set point off a service error from UWP then sealed the victory on an attack error by the Rangers to win the set and the match.
Meyer finished with another double-double recording a career-high in kills with 18 and 16 digs. Smiley finished with 18 set assists while
Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 17 digs.
