Missouri S&T stepped outside of its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule for a night and had success in doing so, blanking Missouri Southern
2-0 at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners got a goal in each half, one from
Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) in the first half and from
Nick Landon (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) in the second, while goalkeepers
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) and
Tom Lawton (Madison, Wis./Madison West) combined to post S&T's fifth shutout of the season.
Shaffer got his goal at the 16:26 mark when
Nick Mentesana (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newton) sent a pass through the Southern defense and he put a shot past goalkeeper Jon Hansen.
The Miners were able to extend their lead a little over two minutes into the second half when Landon took a shot that was stopped by Hansen, but was able to get to the rebound first and put a second attempt just inside the post to make it 2-0.
McNamee made three saves in goal before he was relieved by
Tom Lawton (Madison, Wis./Madison West) for the final 16 minutes; Lawton was able to preserve the shutout by making a nice stop on a shot by Nate Evans in the waning moments.
Missouri S&T, which improved to 5-4-2 on the season with the win, was able to use a number of players in Thursday's contest against a Lion team still seeking its first win of the year, as 24 players saw playing time in the game.
