SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Missouri S&T men's soccer team got one item on the weekend wish list taken care of Friday night, even if the result on the field didn't go as well as it had hoped.
Despite a
4-1 loss to Drury University, the Miners landed a berth to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament as each of the three teams that were tied for seventh place when the day began -- Quincy, Bellarmine and Wisconsin-Parkside -- were unable to win their games Friday.
However, the hopes of landing a home game in the conference tournament that begins next Sunday went by the boards with the loss, as the Panthers -- playing their final league game Friday -- put themselves in a position to lock up the fourth seed with an offensive outburst that started moments after the Miners took the lead in the first half.
Mario Calderon (Mexico City, Mexico/ITESM) put S&T on top at the 30:30 mark when he scored on a free kick, but DU's Steve Wilczewski answered the goal just 39 seconds lafter to tie the score. Drury moved on top with just under six minutes to go in the half on another unassisted goal from Micah Whorton.
The Panthers busted the game open with two goals in a 10-minute span in the second half, one from Andrew Bordelon and the other from Ben Taylor on a free kick.
Drury outshot the MIners by a 17-4 margin on the night and had six corner kicks to S&T's two.
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) was credited with five saves in 77 minutes of action.
The Miners (6-7-4, 4-3-4 GLVC) will wrap up its home schedule Sunday when they host Rockhurst at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field. Missouri S&T's eight seniors will be honored prior to the start of the contest.
