11/13/2008 11:28:17 AM

Box Score Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East)'s goal with 4:26 remaining in the game proved to be the game winner as the Missouri S&T Lady Miners opened conference play with a 2-1 win over Southern Indiana on Friday night in Rolla.

S&T (3-1, 1-0 GLVC) scored the game's first goal not quite six minutes into the match when Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) took a feed from Melia Miller (Richardson, Texas/J.J. Pearce) tucking it inside the far post for the early advantage. The Lady Miners' kept the pressure on for the rest of the half but were unable to beat the keeper for another score. USI (2-3, 0-1 GLVC) countered with some good scoring opportunities of its own but Kelsey Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) came up big in goal making four saves in the frame.

The Screaming Eagles tied the game a little over a minute into the second half on a header by Kara Georgeff off a corner kick. They would continue to have some scoring chances but just like in the first half Kurilla was up to the challenge making some key saves on a couple of breakaways.

The Lady Miners' regained control of the game in the final 20 minutes getting several good looks on goal before Ryan's game-winner from Joanna Kovarik (Gladstone, Mo./North Kansas City).

USI made one last push in the final seconds but were unable to get anything on goal sealing the victory.

S&T out shot the Screaming Eagles by 16-11 margin including 12-7 in shots on goal. Miller led the Lady Miners' with five shots while Young finished with four. Each player put three shots on goal.

Kurilla made six saves in the contest.
