MARION, Ill. -- Missouri S&T suffered their first loss of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, falling to the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons on Friday afternoon. They now move into the losers bracket where they will play No. 3 Indianapolis at 5:30 p.m.
S&T got into trouble early, giving up seven hits and six runs in the opening inning, leading to a pitching change in the opening frame. A pair of hits by the Tritons in the third scored another run, making it a 7-0 contest. The Miners' first hit of the game came in the top of the fourth on a single to right field by
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville).
The Miners threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases after a single by
Will Muench (Wentzville, MO/Timberland), a walk and a hit by pitch, but the Tritons were able to salvage the inning after a strikeout and a fly out.
Missouri-St. Louis added hits in the fifth and sixth innings, extending the lead to 9-0, before S&T answered with their first run of the game. A triple by
Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) in the top of the seventh put a runner in scoring position, with the third baseman scoring two at bats later on a sacrifice fly to left field by Muench.
The Tritons closed out the contest in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a single, a double, and triple to score two and secure the run-rule victory.
