QUINCY, Ill. -- Missouri S&T Volleyball picked up their eighth consecutive win on Friday evening, defeating the Quincy Hawks 25-20, 25-21, 25-23. The win marks the first time in S&T-QU series history that the Miners have swept the Hawks.
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) set a new program record for assists in a three-set match, picking up 42.
The Miners consistently outscored the Hawks two-to-one early in the first frame, with
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) picking up three kills and an ace in the opening eight points of the match. Leading 10-6, a pair of Meyer kills along with a double block by
Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) gave the Miners a 3-0 run that increased the lead to seven at 13-6. The Hawks put together a three-point run of their own later in the set, but the Miners immediately countered with a trio of points, getting kills from
Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) and
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison). Quincy cut the deficit to three late at 22-19 but kills from
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) and Meyer along with an ace from the latter gave S&T the first set 25-20.
The Miners and Hawks traded scoring runs early in set two, with Quincy holding a small lead after the early moments of the frame. After trailing 9-7, the Miners built a commanding lead on a 12-3 run, pulling ahead 19-12. Quincy began to mount a comeback, but kills from Sallade, Rohlwing, and
Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) helped keep the Hawks at bay, with Johnwick picking up a solo block to end the set at 25-21.
Quincy grabbed a small lead early in set three, but the Miners regained control with a four-point run fueled by a Meyer ace and a Rohlwing solo block. S&T led by as many as three early, but Quincy caught up at 15-15, leading to a back-and-forth stretch where the score was tied five times. A kill and a solo block by Sallade created three match points for the S&T, with Johnwick securing the sweep on a kill at 25-23.
The Miners hit .400 as a team, making it six consecutive matches that they have hit .400 or better. Sallade recorded a season-high for kills in a match with 16, adding 6 digs, 2 blocks, and an ace. Meanwhile, Meyer recorded his third double-double of the season, putting down 14 kills and leading the team with 11 digs.
