LEXINGTON, NC -- Missouri S&T Men's Golf has won their second title this season, dominating the competition at the Sapona Intercollegiate on Friday and Saturday. The Miners finished -1 as a team, 23 strokes ahead of runner-up Montana St.-Billings.
After a slow start to round 1, the Miners bounced back with a strong back nine and solid second round, pulling into a co-lead position with host team Montana State Billings.
Cole Komyati (Elberta, AL/Bayside Academy) had one of the best rounds of any individual at the tournament in round 2, shooting 3-under par to help give the Miners a sizable lead of nine strokes.
After shooting +6 in round one and -1 in round two, the Miners sealed the victory with a -6 in the third and final round of the tournament. Komyati,
Isaac To (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School), and
Li Kasule (Stockholm, Sweden/Upplands-Brogymnasiet) all shot 2-under in the final round, while
Chayton Jordan (Rolla, MO/Rolla) rounded out the top four with an even round. To had an exceptional front nine in the final round, recording five birdies in nine holes and shooting 4-under.
The title at Sapona is S&T's second consecutive this season, with the Miners winning the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational in similarly dominant fashion back in October. Four Miners finished in the top ten on the individual leaderboard for the tournament, with Komyati taking second (-3), To tying for fifth (+1), while Kasule and
Rizq Adam Rohizam (Selangor, Malaysia/Robert Louis Stevenson) tied for ninth (+4).
Komyati and To both earned All-Tournament honors for their performances.
