ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T softball split Sunday's doubleheader against Illinois Springfield, falling 7-4 in the opener before responding with a 5-1 win in game two. The Miners move to 19-13 overall and 6-4 in GLVC play.
Game 1 – Illinois Springfield 7, Missouri S&T 4
Missouri S&T battled back to tie the game but ultimately fell 7-4 to Illinois Springfield in the opener.
UIS jumped out early, scoring in the first inning and adding three more runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Miners responded in the bottom of the third, using timely hitting to even the score at 4-4, highlighted by an RBI single from
Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/Broken Arrow).
The Prairie Stars regained the lead in the fifth inning and added insurance runs to pull away for the win.
AJ Agers (DeSoto, MO/St. Pius X) went the distance in the circle, pitching six innings with four strikeouts. Offensively, the Miners saw contributions across the lineup, with Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/Basha), Kaylee LaChappell,
Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/Broken Arrow),
Claire Lopez (Olathe, KS/Olathe Northwest), and
Molly Fitzgerald (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) each recording a hit. Davis and Fitzgerald each drove in two runs, while S&T also turned a double play defensively.
Game 2 – Missouri S&T 5, Illinois Springfield 1
Missouri S&T bounced back in game two with a 5-1 victory, using a combination of power hitting and strong pitching to secure the split.
After trailing 1-0 early, Taylor Nelson (Hailey, ID/Phillips Exeter Academy) tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field. The Miners took control in the fifth, as AJ Agers (DeSoto, MO/St. Pius X) drew a bases-loaded walk to give S&T the lead, and Molly Fitzgerald (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) followed with a two-run double to extend the advantage.
Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) delivered a dominant performance in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing just one run on four hits and striking out seven.
At the plate, Fitzgerald led the way with three RBI on a 2-for-3 performance, while Nelson also added two hits. The Miners showed patience offensively, drawing five walks and capitalizing on scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Missouri S&T returns to action on Friday, April 4, as the Miners host Lincoln in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the S&T Softball Field.
