PARKVILLE, MO — Missouri S&T Men's Volleyball ran into an unbeaten Park squad on Tuesday night, falling in straight sets, 25-15, 25-23, 25-17, at the Brewski's Sports Center. The Miners showed growth as the match progressed, particularly in a tightly contested second set, but could not slow a balanced Park attack that hit .481 on the night.
Park set the tone early, opening the match with a strong first set in which Missouri S&T struggled to find rhythm offensively. The Pirates jumped out to an early lead at 11-4 and never looked back. Kills from Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) and Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) along with an ace by Zachary Carff (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) put the Miners just two behind the Pirates at 14-12, but a 6-0 run by Park ended the comeback as the host team took the opening frame 25-15.
The Miners responded with their best volleyball of the night in the second set. Missouri S&T hit .500 in the frame and traded points throughout, overcoming an early deficit to create four ties down the stretch before the Pirates closed with a 3-1 run to go up by two sets. Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) paced the attack with five kills, while Johnwick added another four and a block.
Looking to extend the match, Missouri S&T kept the Pirates close early in the third set. Park regained control behind a 6-1 run late in the set, backing it up witha 5-2 run to close the frame and win the match in straight sets.
Sallade led the Miners with 11 kills and 12 points, while Meyer added eight kills and five digs. Johnwick provided efficiency in the middle, hitting .500 with six kills, and Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) directed the offense with 30 assists.
