SPRINGFIELD, MO -- Missouri S&T Baseball had strong performances both in the field and at the plate on Friday night, but a big fifth inning for Washburn would prove to be the deciding factor as S&T dropped the game 7-5.
Neither team recorded a hit in the first two innings, with
Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) pitching four scoreless innings to start the game, only giving up two hits and striking out six through the first fifteen at bats.
The Miners were the first to get on the board, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth. A walk and a steal for
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) set him up to score in the following at bat, crossing home plate after a single by
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) and a Washburn error.
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) singled three at bats later, scoring Smith to double the S&T lead.
Washburn retaliated in the top of the fifth, hitting two triples and two doubles and scoring five to go up 5-2. They would add two more runs in sixth, pushing their lead to five runs.
Damgaard and
Caleb Horsey (Springdale, AR/Springdale) worked the count in at bats to start the bottom of the sixth, with both reaching on walks. A throwing error by Washburn allowed Cizek to reach and Damgaard to score in the following at bat, making it a 7-3 game.
Keaton Scott (Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) doubled to the gap in right center next, bringing Cizek and pinch runner
Scott Thompson (Greeley, CO/University) home to make it a 7-5 game.
The Ichabods had runners in scoring position again in the 7th and 8th, but solid work from the defense left four stranded to keep it a two-run game. S&T was unable to record a hit in the final innings though, resulting in the 7-5 loss.
