Box Score 2 ROLLA, MO — Missouri S&T earned a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Valley on Thursday at the Ballpark at S&T, throwing a shutout in game one and a season-high 16 runs in the second.
Game 1: Miners 7, Vikings 0
Missouri S&T Miners scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed in a 7-0 win over the Missouri Valley College Vikings.
Scott Thompson (Greeley, CO/University) reached to begin the bottom of the first and later scored on a single from
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville).
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) followed with an RBI base hit of his own, and
Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0 before Missouri Valley recorded its third out.
Jackson Yerkes (Rossford, OH/Rossford) handled the rest from there. The right-hander worked four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and keeping the Vikings from advancing a runner past second.
Nate Donovan (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South),
Ethan Payne (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville), and
Kaelan Natyshok (Coal City, IL/Coal City) combined for three scoreless innings in relief, striking out six and preserving the shutout as the staff limited Missouri Valley to four hits and struck out nine.
S&T added a run in the fifth when Damgaard delivered his second RBI single of the game, sending the ball into left field to bring
Will Muench (Wentzville, MO/Timberland) home. In the sixth,
Kaden Ruhl (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) doubled home a run after a single and stolen base by
Brennon Wibbenmeyer (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell). Thompson then tripled to center to score one, and Muench brought Thompson in with a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring at seven.
Damgaard finished with two RBIs and two hits on three at bats, while Thompson scored twice and drove in one. The Miners played error-free defense behind their pitching staff in the win, helping the team get out of a bases loaded situation in the top of the 7th to end the game and complete the shutout.
Game 2: Miners 16, Vikings 7
The second game featured more back-and-forth scoring before S&T separated late.
After Muench singled home a run in the first, Missouri Valley built a 4-2 lead through the next three innings. The Miners answered immediately in the bottom of the third. Muench hit a triple to right field in the second at bat, scoring later on a
Caleb Horsey (Springdale, AR/Springdale) single.
Tyler Bizzle (Festus, MO/Festus) followed with a two-run double before crossing home plate on a
Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) single as the Miners moved in front 7-4.
Missouri Valley added a run in the fifth, but the bottom half proved decisive. Thompson hit a three-run home run to left, the Miners first homer of the season.
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) followed with a solo home run, and Hooper added a two-run single as the Miners scored eight runs in the inning to extend the margin to ten.
The Vikings added two runs in the top of the 6th, barely putting a dent in the S&T lead as the Miners scored in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly by
Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) to bring the game to 16-7.
Thompson finished 3-for-5 with six RBIs, the most runs batted in by a Miner since Kenneth Sugi's 6 in a 2024 game against Illinois Springfield. Bizzle scored four runs and drove in two, Hooper recorded three RBIs, and Horsey added another two. S&T totaled 14 hits in the contest, tying their season's game-high.
Street started on the mound, and Bates earned the win after entering in the fourth. Cunningham, Timp, and Manninen combined to finish the game, with the staff striking out 11 in 30 at bats.
Across the doubleheader, the Miners outscored the Vikings 23-7 to close the day. Thompson hit a single, a double, a triple, and a home run between the two games, batting in a team-high seven runs on the day. Damgaard and Hooper also had strong performances at the plate ending the doubleheader with a combined total of 10 RBIs.
