Miners Ride Strong Second Half Offense to 3-1 Victory Over Gorillas

PITTSBURG, KS  —  The Miners defeated the Pitt State Gorillas earlier this afternoon, taking down the MIAA squad in their own stadium by a score of 3-1.

Both teams pressed early and got a shot on goal, with Lily Simpson (Lexington, KY/Lafayette) recording one for the Miners 92 seconds into the contest. Pitt State picked up a goal a few minutes later, scoring at 5:44 to take an early 1-0 advantage. Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) wouldn't allow another goal the rest of the match, picking up six saves.

Still trailing after halftime, the Miners had an offensive surge early in the second half, scoring three goals in just over twelve minutes. Ella Kramer (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) provided the first goal of the contest, heading in a corner from Greycen Erisman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) less than three minutes into the half. Adriana Benassi (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) gave the Miners the lead at 56:04, cutting inside and burying a shot in the top right corner. Erisman picked up the final goal of the afternoon off a free kick just outside the box that curved into the left side of the goal.

S&T continued to take their shots, getting close on an attempt by Melissa Parker (Chesterfield, MO/Marquette) that hit the right woodwork. Pitt State got an opportunity to make it a one goal contest with 20 minutes to play after earning a penalty kick, but Barcom made a diving save to prevent the goal. The Gorillas saved a penalty kick by Erisman late in the match  as well to preserve the final score of 3-1.

"What a great response," Coach Perry said, "We started really poorly, but we knew with our forward players and set pieces we were going to be dangerous so I'm glad the girls came through the tough spell. We will recover now and look to continue this run!"

The team improves to 2-0 for the first time since 2012 and have outscored opponents 7-1 in the first two contests this season.
