ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Baseball is set to play in their first NCAA DII Midwest Regional since 2016 against Grand Valley State on Thursday at 10 a.m. CT.
Series History
The Miners are 3-1 against the Lakers in their all-time history dating back to 2005. They last faced on Feb. 25, 2018, in Evansville, Indiana, as the Miners won 10-7. On May 21, 2016, these two teams played in the NCAA DII Midwest Regional. S&T walked off Grand Valley 2-1 in 10 innings from a Nick Ulrich single. In their first four matchups, every game has been at a neutral site.
About the Lakers
Grand Valley State is 41-12 this season as they went 18-6 in the GLIAC. They lost in the GLIAC Tournament to Wayne State with a final score of 3-1. The Miners and Lakers have two common opponents this season. GVSU defeated Drury in a four-game series 3-1 and swept Upper Iowa 3-0 at the end of the regular season.
The Lakers had four players named to the All-GLIAC First Team after the regular season. Evan Morrison, Ryan Dykstra, Jayden Dentler and Collin Bradley were all named to the All-GLIAC First Team. Jonas Gulbrandsen leads the team with his .351 batting average with 13 doubles, three triples and 13 home runs. Bradley has a 2.31 ERA, while Dentler has put up a 2.57 ERA this season. GVSU's .312 team batting average is first in the GLIAC, while their 3.37 ERA is also first.
About the Miners
Following their first GLVC Tournament championship, the Miners are 32-23 overall with a 17-15 GLVC record. After they lost the opening round against Illinois Springfield in the conference tournament, S&T won five straight games, including an 11-1 victory over UIS for the GLVC Championship. Head coach
Todd DeGraffenreid also earned his 500
th career victory with Missouri S&T at the tournament.
S&T had six players named to the GLVC All-Tournament team.
Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West),
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood),
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community),
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville),
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) and
Zander Street (Festus, MO/St. Pius X) were all picked on the GLVC All-Tournament team. Baugus leads the Miners with a .394 batting average in 49 games played. He is also 36-for-39 in stolen base attempts this season. Bates' 3.97 ERA leads the team with 53 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings pitched.
