FAYETTE, IA -- The Miners took both games in today's doubleheader in Fayette, defeating the Peacocks 9-4 and 10-0. Both
Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/) and
Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) pitched complete games, with the former recording 16 strikeouts. Miller's 16 strikeouts were the most by a Miner pitcher since Ashley Wallingford recorded the same number against #21 Indianapolis in May 2010.
Game 1: Missouri S&T 9, Upper Iowa 4
Upper Iowa took an early lead, hitting a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning. The Miners matched the run with a
Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) double and an
Allie Kelly (Park Hills, MO/Central) single in the top of the next inning. They would add three more runs in the third inning, two of which came on a homer by
Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy).
The Peacocks' most successful inning came in the bottom of the fourth, with Upper Iowa's hitters combining for three runs, a homerun, 2 doubles, and a single. After spending an inning tied at 4-4, a solo homerun by
Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/) gave the Miners a 5-4 lead in the top of the 6th. They would add another four runs in the top of the 7th, getting RBIs from
Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/), Neal, and Davis. Miller picked up a couple more strikeouts in the bottom of the 7th to put the game to bed for a 9-4 Miners win.
Game 2: Missouri S&T 10, Upper Iowa 0
Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) held the Peacocks without a hit for the first four innings, allowing the Miners to take a five-run lead after a big 4th inning where they scored all five runs on three hits and a pair of UIU errors. In the 5th, a single by Neal and a double by Kelly led to an RBI single for
Joselyn Ulloa (Chicago, IL/) later in the inning, pushing the Miners' lead to 6-0.
Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) and Nelson both recorded a single and a stolen base to start the inning, with both making it home to give S&T an 8-0 lead. Singles by Davis, Ulloa, and
Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/) led to another two S&T runs, putting the Miners up 10-0. Upper Iowa only managed one hit off Kanoy in the bottom of the 6th, leading to a mercy rule victory for the Miners.
The Miners recorded 26 hits today, making this their most successful day offensively this season. Ulloa had her best game of her career at the plate, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs. Neal, Nelson, and Grobe each recorded four hits today, while Nelson led the team in RBIs with four.
