Softball Earns Split in Quincy; Miller Ends Weekend with 30 Ks

QUINCY, IL  --  The Miners split today's doubleheader against Quincy to end the weekend 3-1. After picking up 16 strikeouts yesterday, Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/) added another 14 to her weekend's total to make it 30 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched.

Game 1: Quincy 2, Missouri S&T 1
After 0 hits in the first two innings, the Miners capitalized on a pair of Hawks errors to bring Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/) home on a fielder's choice play and take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd. Miller only game up two hits in the first 5 innings, holding Quincy scoreless in that time and recording 11 strikeouts in that time.

Still up 1-0 in the bottom of the 6th, Miller would start off the inning with a fly out and a strikeout to get an out away from the final inning. Quincy's Kenzie Moss smashed a triple down the right field line in the next at bat, setting up the tying run on third base. A double by Allyson Maynard in the following at bat would bring Moss home and set the Hawks up with the leading run on second. Maynard would score on a single to center field in the next at bat to put the Hawks up 2-1 entering the final inning. Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/) picked up a hit in the final inning but was left stranded as S&T fell 2-1 in the first game of the day.

Game 2: Missouri S&T 15, Quincy 1
The Miners got their first run of the game early in game 2, getting a double and a single in the top of the 2nd to go up 1-0 before Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/) stole home to make it 2-0. They doubled their run total in the top of the 3rd, getting four hits including an RBI double from Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) and an RBI single from Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy). Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) held the Hawks hitless for the first two innings before giving up a single in the bottom of the third that scored a run for the Hawks.

Leading 4-1, the Miners added another three runs in the top of the 4th, two of which came off a homerun by Anderson. The score would remain at 7-1 for the next three half innings, taking the game into the top of the 6th. Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill) started the inning with a lead off single, starting an 8-run, 4-hit inning for the Miners that pushed their lead to 15-1. After 6 strong innings for Kanoy, Miller came in to close the game, putting three straight batters away and picking up her 14th strikeout of the day to end the game.
