ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Baseball fell to Pittsburg State 17-12 on Tuesday afternoon to conclude their five-game homestand.
Gorillas 17, Miners 12
Pittsburg State won a slugfest over Missouri S&T with 12 of their 17 runs scored in the final four innings.
The Gorillas took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo home run. The Miners answered with four runs in the home half.
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) and
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) both singled to start the frame.
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) blasted a three-run home run, his third of the season.
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) followed him with a solo homer, his second of 2025.
In the second, S&T took a 7-1 lead.
Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) walked,
Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central) was hit by a pitch and both advanced on a wild pitch. Baugus scored a run with a groundout before Krodinger blasted a two-run shot, his sixth of the year.
Pittsburg State made it 7-5 with a four-run third inning. In the home half, Smith singled, stole second and advanced to third via groundout. Evans brought him across with a groundout to make the score 8-5.
Starter
Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen) pitched one inning and yielded a run on one hit and three walks.
Zander Street (Festus, MO/St. Pius X) surrendered four runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Jaden Jones (St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings.
Following two scoreless innings, Pittsburg State put up four runs between the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-8 lead. The Miners tied the score in the bottom of the seventh. Smith singled, stole second and went to third on a groundout. Bell singled to center field to bring Smith home and tie the score at 9-9. Over the final two innings, S&T gave up eight runs.
Trey Kaberline (Gardner, KS/Gardner-Edgerton) was charged with three runs on three hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.
Cody Hazzard (Mazon, IL/Yorkville Christian) surrendered a run in his inning.
Dylan Wipf (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) gave up an unearned run in 2/3 of an inning to take the loss, his first of the season.
Michael Streb (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) yielded seven runs, six earned, in one inning.
Brandon Hull (Kansas City, MO/Liberty North) closed out the game with a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.
With a 17-9 deficit, S&T recorded three runs in the ninth to finalize the score at 12-9. Smith recorded his fourth hit of the day with a triple to start the inning.
Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) walked and Bell blasted a three-run home run, his first of the season.
Smith went 4-for-5 with one RBI and four runs scored. He was a double shy of the cycle. Baugus went 3-for-5 with a walk, one RBI and a run scored. Bell tallied two hits, one walk, four RBI and two runs. The Miners blasted four home runs in this game with their 13 hits and six walks.
Baugus and Smith both stole two bags, while Bell took one.
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) and Bell were both hit by a pitch.
S&T moved to 21-16 with the loss. They are 13-11 and sit in seventh place in the GLVC.
What's Next
S&T will go on the road for eight straight games. They will play a non-conference series at Wisconsin-Parkside in a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for Apr. 17 at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Apr. 18 and the series finale on Apr. 19. The Miners will play Upper Iowa from Apr. 25-27 to conclude their road trip.
