S&T Softball Split Against Drury to Open GLVC Play

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Softball split with Drury on Sunday afternoon to open the GLVC schedule.

Game 1: Miners 6, Panthers 4
 
Missouri S&T won their home opener on Sunday against Drury in game one of the doubleheader.

The Miners were on the board early with three runs in the first frame. Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) led off the inning with a single, a stolen base and she advanced to third on a fly out. After Nelson scored on a wild pitch and Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) walked, Allie Kelly (Park Hills, MO/Central) singled. Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/) brought two runs home with a double to right field to make the score 3-0.

In the third, Drury made it a one-run game, but S&T responded with two runs in the bottom half. Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) singled and Anderson blasted a two-run home run, her third of the season to increase the S&T lead to 5-2.

In the fifth, the Panthers once again put up two runs to make it a one-run game. The Miners picked up an insurance run in the sixth inning. Nelson singled and Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) was hit by a pitch. Grobe doubled to right field to score Nelson and make the score 6-4. The Miners held off a bases loaded jam in the seventh to win the game over Drury.

S&T starter Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/) earned her second win of the season after she pitched 6 1/3 innings with four runs, two earned, given up. She struck out four batters on 111 total pitches thrown. Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) saved her second game of the year with her 2/3 of an inning pitched in the seventh.

Anderson led the Miners with a homer, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored. Grobe went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Thompson collected two RBI with her double and walk. In total, S&T picked up eight hits and five walks in the GLVC opening game.

Game 2: Panthers 10, Miners 2
 
In a five-inning contest, Drury won over Missouri S&T 10-2.

After the Panthers made it 4-0 between the first two innings, the Miners put up a run in the bottom of the second inning. Thompson singled to leadoff the inning and Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill) walked after her. Thompson came across on a wild pitch.

With a 9-1 deficit in the fourth, Thompson walked and Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/) doubled to advance Thompson to third. Mackenzie Shields (Kansas City, MO/Platte County) grounded out to score Davis and make the score 9-2.

Kanoy threw three innings for S&T and gave up nine runs, five earned, on eight hits and one walk yielded. She struck out five batters and took the loss. Reliever Tinley Beecham (Mapleton, IL/) surrendered a run in two innings pitched.

Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double for the Miners. Thompson was 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored. Nelson stole a bag in this game for S&T.

The Miners moved to 4-15 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC following this series.

What's Next

The Miners will head back down to Branson to play Augustana (SD) and Minot State on Thursday. GLVC play will continue at home on Saturday and Sunday against Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis.
