BRANSON & ROLLA, MO -- Missouri S&T Softball had a full slate of action last week, playing six games in four days. Their lone win of the week came against Maryville on Saturday in a 10-1 run rule.
#8 Augustana 5, Missouri S&T 0
A homerun by Augustana in their first at bat of the game put them ahead by one early. The Vikings nearly added another late in the bottom of the first, attempting steal home but getting thrown out on a well-executed throw from
Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) to
Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/).
Allie Kelly (Park Hills, MO/Central),
Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/), and
Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill) all recorded singles in the top of the second, loading the bases before a strikeout ended the inning with all three runners left stranded. Pitchers from both squads locked in for the next four half innings, not allowing a hit in that time. Three hits by the Vikings compounded with three errors on the Miners defense led to Augustana scoring four runs in the bottom of the 5th. The Miners were able to get two more runners on base in the final innings, but failed to bring either home.
Minot State 2, Missouri S&T 0
A hit by pitch and a stolen base for Minot State set them up to score the first run of the game on a single to center field in the top of the 1st inning. The Miners got their first baserunner of the game in the opening inning as well, with
Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) reaching on a fielding error before getting forced out at second o a double play that ended the inning with S&T still trailing 1-0.
Davis would record the Miners first hit of the game, doubling to center field in the bottom of the third. The Beavers would hit a double of their own right after a triple in the top of the 5th to add their second run of the day, going up 2-0.
Autumn Trower (Troy, MO/) would record the Miners second and final hit of the day, sending a ball into center field for a single in the top of the 6th but being left on base as the Miners were unable to catch MSU.
Game 1: Maryville 7, Missouri S&T 4
The Miners grabbed an early lead against Maryville, scoring twice in the bottom of the first after singles from
Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) and Nelson, as well as a 2 RBI double from Thompson. Maryville would take away the lead two innings later though, hitting a homerun with two on base to go up 3-2.
Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the 5th, tying the game at 3-3.
The Saints did not take long to reclaim the lead, recording two singles and two doubles in the top of the 6th to take a 7-3 lead. A sacrifice fly by Thompson in the bottom of the seventh would add one more run to the Miners' total but would not be enough to overcome the four-run difference.
Game 2: Missouri S&T 10, Maryville 1 (5 inning)
Just like game one of the doubleheader, the Miners took an early lead in the top of the first, with a pair of singles and two errors on the Saints paving the way to a 6-0 lead for the Miners after a grand slam by
Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill). A double by the Saints in the top of the third led to their first and only run of the game, making it 6-1.
Taylor Nelson's (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) double in the bottom of the 4th helped put the Miners up 8-1, with both
Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/) and Nelson scoring that inning. Anderson would hit a two run homer in the bottom of the 5th inning to end the game in a run rule and split the doubleheader against Maryville.
Game 1: Missouri-St. Louis 9, Missouri S&T 4
The Tritons capitalized on three hits and two Miner errors in the 1st inning, allowing them to take a 4-0 lead. S&T quickly cut the lead in half though, with Anderson hitting a two-run homerun in the second at bat of the game to make it 4-2.
The scoring would continue into the top of the second, after UMSL hit a double and two singles to help bring two more runs home. A homerun by Grobe and a triple by LaChappell helped the Miners cut it to a two-run game again, making it 6-4 entering the top of the 7th. However, a double and two singles for the Tritons helped them build a comfortable lead late, going up 9-4 in the final inning with the Miners failing to respond in the bottom of the 7th as S&T lost game one of the doubleheader.
Game 2: Missouri-St. Louis 7, Missouri S&T 3
A Thompson double in the 1st inning aided the Miners in taking an early 2-0 lead over the Tritons. UMSL would tie the game two innings later though, using a two-run homer to make it 2-2. An Anderson double and a Grobe single allowed the Miners to reclaim the lead in the top of the third, making it 3-2.
Four hits and an error in the top of the top of the 4th would allow UMSL to take their first lead of the game, scoring five runs and taking a 7-3 lead. A double and a single for the Miners in the final innings would prove insufficient to catch the Tritons, falling 7-3 in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.
