PITTSBURG, Kan. – Missouri S&T Baseball fell at Pittsburg State 7-8 on Wednesday afternoon ahead of their GLVC opener this weekend.
Gorillas 8, Miners 7
The Gorillas put up three early runs in the first inning on the Miners. Starter
Dylan Wipf (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) tossed an inning for the Miners and gave up three runs on one hit and two walks.
Trey Kaberline (Gardner, KS/Gardner-Edgerton) was charged with three runs in 1/3 of an inning, while
Brandon Hull (Kansas City, MO/Liberty North) threw a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.
S&T got a run back in the top of the second inning.
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) doubled down the left field line and stole third base. After
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) was hit by a pitch,
Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) singled to make the score 1-3. The Gorillas made the score 6-1 in the home half of the second.
In the fourth, Meyer was hit by a pitch and Krodinger doubled to advance him to third. Hooper brought them both home with a double to make the score 3-6. Pittsburg State answered with one run in the home half.
Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) pitched two innings for S&T and yielded one run.
Jaden Jones (St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) tossed a scoreless inning and
Michael Streb (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) recorded a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.
Bryce Morgan (Benton, MO/Kelly) struck out two batters in a scoreless frame.
The Miners made it a one-run game in the sixth inning with three runs.
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) singled to lead off the inning and Meyer walked. Prince came across to score on a throwing error and Krodinger advanced to second base on a wild pitch.
Landen Roberts (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) singled to plate both runs and make it a one-run game.
They tied the game in the eighth at 7-7.
Andrew Hedgecorth (Smithville, MO/Smithville) singled and stole second for S&T. As a pinch hitter,
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) singled to score Hedgecorth and tie the game at 7-7.
The Gorillas responded in the bottom half with a run that won them the game 8-7.
Cody Hazzard (Mazon, IL/Yorkville Christian) took the loss for the Miners after he yielded a run in 2/3 of an inning.
Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) and
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) both pitched 1/3 of an inning.
Hooper went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Miners. Roberts drove in two runs and Hedgecorth picked up two hits. Meyer scored three times for the Miners and Krodinger went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. S&T totaled 11 hits with three extra-base hits.
What's Next
The Miners will welcome Missouri-St. Louis this weekend to open GLVC play. They will play the Tritons at home on Mar. 7 at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Mar. 8 at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. The series finale is slated for Mar. 9 at 12 p.m.
