Softball Drops Doubleheader on Windy Day vs RV Lewis

ROLLA, MO  --  Missouri S&T dropped both games in today's doubleheader vs RV Lewis, struggling to put up runs against the top two pitchers in the conference as they fell 11-1, 6-1. It was another windy day at the S&T ballpark today, with winds gusting up to 26 miles per hour, blowing from the outfield to the infield.

Game 1: Lewis 11, Missouri S&T 1
A lead off triple by the Flyers helped set up a two-run 1st inning for the visitors, scoring on a sac bunt and a sac fly. Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/) hit an infield single in the Miners' first at bat of the game, stealing second two at bats later before being left stranded. While neither team would score in the 2nd inning, both would hit a double in the 3rd, with Sydney Anderson's (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) double coming on the heels of another LaChappell single to bring #11 home for the Miners first run of the day and make it 2-1.

Tinley Beecham (Mapleton, IL/) would step into the circle to pitch for the Miners in the top of the 4th, helping get the team out of a bases loaded-one out situation later in the inning with a strikeout and a flyout. A pair of early walks for the Flyers in the top of the 5th helped set them up to bring three runs home in that inning, taking a 5-1 lead. Lewis continued to tack on the runs in the 6th and 7th, recording 8 hits and 6 more runs to pull away for an 11-1 victory.

Game 2: Lewis 6, Missouri S&T 1
Two singles and a double in the 1st were enough to bring one run home for the Flyers, putting them up 1-0. LaChappell recorded another lead off single in the bottom of the first, advancing to second on an Anderson single before a couple of flyouts brought her home to tie the game 1-1. The Miners would get a runner in scoring position again in the bottom of the 2nd, with a single and a stolen base by Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill) putting her on second base with just one out on the board. A foul out and a line out would prevent Jones from advancing any further though, keeping the score 1-1.

The Miners defense would struggle in the top of the 3rd inning, recording 3 errors and allowing 4 runs to allow the Flyers to go ahead 5-1. Singles by Anderson and Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) in the bottom of the 3rd would lead to a bases loaded situation for the Miners with 2 outs. Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/) stepped in to pinch hit for the Miners but was unable to get the ball out of the infield, leading to a fielder's choice out at second that left all three runners stranded. In the top of the 5th, another fielding error by the Miners extended the inning and allowed Lewis to add another run to make it a 6-1 game. Singles by Nelson and Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/) helped the Miners get bases loaded again in the bottom of the 7th, but a flyout would end the game with all three runners still on base, giving the Flyers a 6-1 win.

Anderson and LaChappell had the best performances at the plate for the Miners this series, with Anderson going 3-for-5 with an RBI and LaChappell going 3-for-7 with two runs.
