Kanoy’s 11 Strikeouts Lift Miners to 1-1 Record in Doubleheader vs UIS

SPRINGFIELD, IL  --  S&T moved to 4-6 in conference play, splitting their doubleheader against the Prairie Stars with a 5-1 win before falling 7-4 in game two. Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) recorded 11 strikeouts in game one, setting an S&T high for strikeouts in a game this season.

Missouri S&T 5, Illinois Springfield 1
Kanoy recorded six strikeouts in the first three innings, only giving up one hit in that time to help hold the Prairie Stars scoreless. The Miners got two on base in the top of the 1st, with Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) walking and Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) singling to put a runner in scoring position before Nelson got caught stealing at second base to end the inning.

Anderson would record the first run of the day for either team in the top of the 4th, hitting a solo homerun in the first at bat of the inning as S&T went up 1-0. Kanoy kept the hits low for UIS, only giving up one in the next two innings, leading to the Miners entering the top of the 6th up by one run.

A hit by pitch followed by a Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) double set the Miners up to score twice early in the 6th, increasing their lead to 3-0. Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/) would add two more runs later in the inning, hitting a single to left field to bring Allie Kelly (Park Hills, MO/Central) and Isabella Welton (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) home to extend the Miners' lead to 5-0. The Prairie Stars would pick up their only run of the game in the following inning, recording back to back doubles to earn the run, but failing to produce enough offense to overtake the Miners through the final two innings.

Illinois Springfield 7, Missouri S&T 4
The Miners' offense got off to a strong start, scoring two runs in the 1st inning with Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/) and Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) contributing hits in the inning. The Prairie Stars would take the lead in the 2nd inning, recording two singles, a double, and a triple to score four runs and go up 4-2.UIS would increase that lead in the next inning, getting another four hits and adding three runs to their total to pull ahead 7-2.

LaChappell would be involved in the Miners last two runs of the game, scoring a run in the 5th on an RBI double from Anderson and recording an RBI of her own in the final inning, bringing Mackenzie Shields (Kansas City, MO/Platte County) home on an infield single. The Miners would go on to lose the game 7-4.

Kanoy's 11 strikeouts are the most by a Miner pitcher in a single game since Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) had 13 Ks against Indianapolis in S&T's win during last year's Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship.
