FAYETTE, IA -- The fifth-ranked Miners took their first loss of 2025 earlier this afternoon, falling to Upper Iowa 100-85.
Lovell Williams (Rogers, MN/Maple Grove) and
Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) combined for 8 of the Miners first 10 points, keeping even with the Peacocks in the opening minutes. Threes by UIU's Kyle Hrncir and Gavin Hershberger capped off a 13-4 run for the Peacocks that put them ahead by nine points nearly halfway through the first. A short while later, the Peacocks scored seven in a row to take their largest lead of the half at 39-24. The Miners fought to cut into Upper Iowa's lead, with
Blaise Beauchamp (Minnetonka, MN/Hopkins) cutting the lead to five. UIU's Nick Reid responded though, helping the Peacocks maintain a 53-44 lead at the half.
The Peacocks offensive success continued at the start of the second half, with the home team pulling ahead by a game-high 16 points in the first five minutes. Baskets by
Zac Brown (Collinsville, OK/Collinsville) and Williams helped the Miners put together a 6-0 run at 14:24 that brought it to a 10-point game. However, the Peacocks responded yet again, returning the game to a 16-point difference less than two minutes. S&T drew as close as 8 in the waning minutes of the contest but were unable to stop Upper Iowa's offensive responses, leading to a 100-85 Peacock win.
Young's 20 points and 9 rebounds were both team highs, while Williams had 18 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, and 1 block.
