MEMPHIS, TN -- The Missouri S&T Miners breezed through three sets against the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians, taking down the first year program team 25-10, 25-8, 25-16. The Miners recorded 10 service aces, setting a program record for most aces in a three set match.
Set 1
After trading the opening points one apiece, the Miners went on a 6-1 run to go up 7-2. However, Magicians senior Richard Lowe would be the primary catalyst in a 5-0 LeMoyne-Owen run that would tie the set at 7-7. The Miners would respond with a 12-0 run of their own, with kills being recorded by
Zachary Carff (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic),
Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East),
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey), and
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) in that stretch. The Miners only allowed three points the rest of the set, taking it 25-10. Meyer ended the set with 6 kills.
Set 2
The Miners claimed an early lead again, this time with
Josh Duett (Grain Valley, Mo./Grain Valley) capping off a 7-1 run with a kill. LOC took two of the next five points before the Miners went on a 6-0 run that featured kills from Meyer, Sallade, and
Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington). Already up 17-5, the Miners added another five points to their total with a 5-0 that put them three points away from set three. A couple of Magician service errors and a kill by
Jack Cioni () would end the set at 25-8 in S&T's favor.
Set 3
The Magicians fared significantly better in the third set, keeping up with S&T early and finding themselves down by only one at 10-9. However,
Grogan Kraus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) would lead the team on a 3-0 run to extend their lead to four. LOC would cut that lead in half at 13-11 before the Miners began to gradually pull away again, eventually using a 4-0 run to go ahead 22-14. The teams traded points in the final five rallies, allowing the Miners to take the set at 25-16.
Notable Performances
- Meyer: Led the team in kills with 10... recording a .818 attacking percentage.
- "Aces, Charles": Six different Miners recorded at least one ace in the match, helping the team set a program record for aces in a three set match with 10.
