Miners Fall to Saints in Three

ROLLA, MO  --  The Miners lost to the Maryville Saints earlier tonight, playing a trio of tight sets but ultimately falling 3-0.

Set 1
Two early kills from Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) helped the Miners jump out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, leading to a Maryville timeout. The Saints took five of the next six points out of the timeout, cutting S&T's lead to one. Meyer would come up big again though, serving for the Miners in a 5-0 run in which he recorded two aces. The Saints would work their way back into the set though, eventually drawing even at 14-14. The Miners took the next three points but found themselves tied again at 18-18, at which point the Saints took their first lead of the set, going up 21-18. The Miners would go on to survive a handful of Maryville set points before MU's Makai Scott shut the door with a kill at 25-23.

Set 2
Maryville took a large lead to start the second set, going up 12-6 on the Miners. S&T managed to link together points through the midpoint of the set though, leading to Miners catching Maryville at 20-20. The Saints' hitters stepped up when they needed to most though, recording three straight kills to make it 23-20. Kills from Meyer and Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) helped S&T make it a one point game at 23-22 before the Saints ended the set with back-to-back kills.

Set 3
The teams matched each other point for point early in the third, with neither team leading by more than two. The Saints went on a 4-0 run at 7-7 though, leading to a Miners timeout. S&T chipped away at Maryville's lead, cutting it to two at 15-13. The Miners were never able to fully close the gap though, eventually losing the set 25-18 after the Saints went on a 5-1 run to end it.

Notable Performances

  • Meyer: Tied with Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) for the most kills on the team with 9 and also recorded a pair of service aces.
  • Zachary Carff (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic): Had his most productive game of the season in the attacking game, recording a .444 hitting percentage with 5 kills and just one error on nine attempts.
