ST. LOUIS, MO -- Missouri S&T defeated #1-seed Missouri-St. Louis 1-0 on Sunday, with the decisive goal coming from
Adriana Benassi (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) at 71:42. The Tritons were also the #2 in the region entering today's match.
With a strong wind at their backs, the Miners dominated possession early, getting two shots from Benassi and a corner kick in the opening 10 minutes. S&T continued to press for much of the first half, except for an 11-minute stretch that saw the Tritons take five shots, with none of the scoring opportunities proving successful as the match went into halftime 0-0.
Each team recorded a pair of shots in the opening minutes of the second half, two of which were blocked and another resulting in a save for
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain). Missouri-St. Louis would pressure the Miner defense for the majority of the half but failed to find the back of the net despite several strong scoring opportunities.
Benassi would score the lone goal of the game at 71:42, taking the ball up the left sideline and burying a shot in the upper right corner past the outstretched arms of the diving UMSL keeper. The Tritons visibly increased offensive intensity in the final minutes of the match but were unable to find an equalizer as Barcom and the defense held on to give the Miners the 1-0 upset over the #1 seed.
Benassi ended the match with 8 of the Miners 9 shots, 4 of which were on goal. Barcom picked up 5 saves to earn the shutout, improving her season record in goal to 8-5-3.
