Women’s Basketball Rallies but Comes Up Short at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – Missouri S&T women's basketball went toe-to-toe with Emporia State on Saturday afternoon, showing poise and energy throughout before narrowly falling 78-72 at White Auditorium.

The Miners (1-2) stayed within striking distance all afternoon, using a strong third quarter to surge ahead late before the Hornets reclaimed the lead in the final minutes. S&T outscored Emporia State 19-15 in the third, fueled by key buckets from Anna Finley (Owensville, MO/Owensville) and Anna Gilbertson (Lake Zurich, IL/Lake Zurich), and entered the fourth quarter with a 51-50 advantage.

Finley led the Miners with 20 points, knocking down three three-pointers and going 5-for-6 at the free-throw line. Gilbertson added 17 points and four rebounds, while Ava McCulla (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South) anchored the interior with 12 points and eight rebounds. Norah Gum (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) led S&T on the boards with 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.

The Miners dominated the glass, outrebounding Emporia State 48-42, including 18 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second-chance points. S&T added 30 points in the paint and forced nine turnovers, converting them into 11 fast-break points.

Despite S&T's strong inside presence, Emporia State's late free-throw shooting, hitting 21-of-24 at the line, proved to be the difference.
