ST. LOUIS, MO — Missouri S&T Volleyball battled through three tightly contested sets Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena but ultimately fell 3-0 to Maryville, with the Saints taking the match by scores of 25-18, 25-23, and 28-26.
Set One (Maryville 25, Missouri S&T 18)
Maryville jumped out to an early lead at 8-3 and maintained control throughout the first set, using a balanced attack and timely blocking to stay in front. The Miners struggled to string points together, not scoring more than two in a row as the Saints closed the frame with a 2-0 run to take the opener.
Set Two (Maryville 25, Missouri S&T 23)
The second set was a showcase of S&T's resilience, as the Miners rallied from a 14-5 deficit. A 9-0 surge featuring three kills by Selin Ozdemir (Ankara, Turkey/TED Ankara Koleji) briefly gave the Miners the lead at 22-20. Despite the momentum swing, Maryville held on in the closing points to edge out the set, 25-23.
Set Three (Maryville 28, Missouri S&T 26)
The final frame was a thriller, featuring 14 ties and six lead changes. The Miners had a set point at 24-22, but a three kills in a row by Maryville standout Ella Brinkmann put them behind late in the set. They would save a pair of match points before falling 28-26 to conclude the match.
Ozdemir led the Miners offensively with eleven kills, while Addie Schoenberger (Menomonee Falls, WI/Hamilton Sussex) added nine kills of her own to go with 3 blocks. Lexi Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, IL/Newsome) had a solid perfomance with 4 kills and no errors on 11 attempts, adding 8 digs and a block as well. Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) guided the offense with 22 assists and a team-high 14 digs.
