ROLLA, MO — Missouri S&T women's volleyball battled throughout Friday night's matchup but came up short in a 3-0 decision to the visiting Indianapolis Greyhounds inside the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
Despite the sweep, the Miners showed grit in several tight stretches—particularly in the opening and closing frames. Lexi Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, IL/Newsome) paced the offense with 8 kills, and the Miners' back row anchored a strong defensive effort with 52 digs across the three sets.
Set 1
The Miners came out firing, jumping to an early 10-4 lead behind kills from Kosmopolis and Addie Schoenberger (Menomonee Falls, WI/Hamilton Sussex), and double block from Schoenberger and Avery Patton (Lathrop, MO/Truman). S&T pulled ahead by as many as nine, leading 14-5, before the Greyhounds began to claw their way back into the set starting with a 5-0 run. Indianapolis eventually pulled within two at 20-18 before kills from Kate Zipprich (Hardin, IL/Calhoun) and Selin Ozdemir (Ankara, Turkey/TED Ankara Koleji) put the Miners in position for three set points at 24-21. UIndy refused to go away though, taking the next four points to save the set before winning it 27-25 on a kill from Kaitlin Fasbender.
Set 2
Indianapolis' serving pressure created separation early in the second frame as the Greyhounds opened on a 6-0 run. Missouri S&T fought back with aces from Mya McClain (Fort Dodge, IA/St. Edmond) and Schoenberger along with a pair of kills by Patton to trim the deficit to one at 11-10, but UIndy closed strong to take set two 25-13.
Set 3
S&T again made a late push after falling behind early, overcoming a seven point deficit and pulling within two points late thanks to kills from Ozdemir and Kosmopolis. The Miners strung together two 4-1 runs to cut the score to 24-22, but UIndy held on for the 25-22 set and match win.
Kosmoplis tallied a team-high eight kills to go with 11 digs, while Schoenberger and Ozdemir each added seven kills. Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) dished out 19 assists and tied for a team-high of 11 digs with Kosmopolis and Ozdemir, while Avery Patton (Lathrop, MO/Truman) added two aces and three blocks.
