KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T Women's Basketball edged Truman State 74-72 after a game-winning layup from
Chorus Davis (Kansas City, MO/Lincoln College Prep).
In the first quarter, the Miners outscored the Bulldogs 23-15. S&T went out to an early 10-2 lead after
Franchesca Metz' (Downers Grove, IL/Nazareth Academy) seven points. The Bulldogs went on their own run to go up 11-10 midway through the quarter. S&T went on a 12-4 run to end the quarter to lead 23-15.
The Miners went up 41-32 at halftime after an 18-17 second quarter.
Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) had seven of the 18 points for S&T in the quarter with three layups and one free throw made.
Norah Gum (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) ended the half with a bucket made with just 12 seconds to go/
Truman State attempted a comeback in the second half as they outscored the Miners 21-16 in the third quarter. After a Truman three-pointer, the Miners put up six straight points until the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run. To end the quarter, Gum put in a free throw to make the score 57-53.
The Bulldogs outscored the Miners 19-17 in the fourth quarter, but they held on to win 74-72. Truman took a three-point lead midway through the quarter, but
Morgan Luebbering (St. Thomas, MO/Fatima) got it back within one point. After that, the Bulldogs went up by six points with 3:54 left. S&T tied the score with two
Norah Gum (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) free throws. Truman took a three-point lead until
Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) drained a three-pointer to tie the game with .36 seconds left.
Chorus Davis (Kansas City, MO/Lincoln College Prep) made a layup with 1 second left in the game to win it for the Miners.
Roberts led the Miners with 15 points and 7-for-12 shooting. Gum tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Metz picked up 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Davis had the game-winning layup and six rebounds.
S&T shot 51.8% from the field and 35.7% from beyond the arc. They out-rebounded Truman 38-30. The Miners had 44 points in the paint and 19 bench points. From the charity stripe, Missouri S&T went 11-for-13.
The Miners continued their best start to a season since 2011-12 where they went 8-2 through their first 10 games. Their 3-1 GLVC record is fourth place in the conference behind 4-0 Drury.
The Miners originally scheduled game against William Jewell on Sunday was postponed to Jan. 20 at 3 p.m.
What's Next
Their next game is slated for Jan. 11 at home versus Drury at 1 p.m. They will welcome Maryville on Jan. 16 and Missouri-St. Louis on Jan. 18 until their newly schedule game at William Jewell on Jan. 20.
