QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T Men's Volleyball defeated Quincy on Friday afternoon for their first win of the 2025 season.
The closest set of the afternoon was the first set as the Miners won it 25-23. S&T went out to an early 7-3 lead thanks to a kill from
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd), an attack error and a block from
Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East). The Hawks responded with a 5-1 run to tie the set up at 10-10. The two teams were back-and-forth the rest of the set until the Miners took a 21-19 lead. That lead eventually held as
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) recorded the last kill to win 25-23.
Quincy answered in the second set as they won it 25-18 to tie up the match. An early 10-6 lead guided them up to a 16-11 lead midway through the set. Missouri S&T never got back within two points as the Hawks went on a 5-2 run to end the set.
The Miners responded in the third set 25-21 to go up in the match 2-1. Quincy held a 5-3 lead, but the Miners recorded six straight points to take a 9-5 lead. Late in the set, Quincy made it 20-21, but Meyer recorded a kill and a block to make it a three-point advantage. An attack error ended the set as S&T went up 2-1.
In the fourth set, S&T closed the door as they won it 25-19 to win their first match of the season. After Quincy took a 4-3 lead, S&T put up five straight points until Quincy answered with six points to take an 11-9 lead. The Miners took the lead back and went out to their biggest advantage of the afternoon at 21-15. Johnwick ended the match for the Miners with a kill as S&T won it 3-1.
Meyer led the match with 20 kills with a .350 hitting percentage. Sallade picked up a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Johnwick hit for .583 with seven kills and no errors.
Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) led the team with five aces and three total blocks.
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) led the setters with 39 assists.
As a team, the Miners tallied 51 total kills and a .322 hitting percentage. They added seven aces, eight blocks and 31 digs. They held Quincy to a .239 hitting percentage.
What's Next
The Miners are back in action on Saturday to face Emmanuel (Ga.) at 1 p.m. and Roosevelt at 7 p.m. They will open their home slate on Feb. 6 to play Park (Mo.) at 6 p.m.
