QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T Men's Volleyball swept the QU Invite this weekend as they defeated Emmanuel and Roosevelt on Saturday.
Match 1: Missouri S&T vs. Emmanuel (Ga.), 3-0 W
The Miners won the first set over the Lions 25-23. Emmanuel took a 5-3 lead early in the match, but S&T tied it up at 5-5 and later at 8-8. The Miners recorded three straight points to go up 12-10. S&T held that lead all the way to the end of the set as the two teams went back-and-forth.
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) ended the set with a kill.
S&T won the second set 25-22 to go up 2-0 in the match. Once again, the Lions took a 5-3 lead to begin the set and the Miners tied it up at 8-8. With a 13-14 deficit for the Miners, they recorded five points in six attempt to go out to an 18-15 lead.
Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) collected a block to make it set point and
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) finished the set with a kill.
In the third, S&T recorded a 25-23 win to sweep the Lions on Saturday afternoon. Emmanuel took a 6-4 lead that turned into a 12-8 lead. The Miners brought it back within one point at 12-13 following four points in five attempts. The Miners were in a hole at 16-21 until they went on a seven-point run to go up 23-21. Sallade ended the match with a block to win it.
Meyer led the match with 12 kills on only three errors in 26 attempts. Sallade recorded 10 kills and
Zachary Carff (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) picked up nine with 10 digs. Sallade, Johnwick and Rohlwing all had three blocks for the Miners.
Jordan Orr (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) tallied 24 assists.
Match 2: Missouri S&T vs. Roosevelt, 3-0 W
Missouri S&T dominated the first set over Roosevelt with a 25-15 win. An early 8-3 lead over Roosevelt helped the Miners as a 5-1 run made it 13-5 midway through the set. S&T kept running up the score as a kill from Meyer made it 20-9. They went on to win the first set 25-15 to go up in the match 1-0.
The Miners won a second set thriller 27-25 to increase their match lead to 2-0. Neither team held more than a one-point lead until the Miners put up two straight points at 10-8. Roosevelt took a 17-15 lead, but S&T took a 20-19 lead. Late in the set, Roosevelt got into a match point twice at 24-22 and 25-24. S&T put up three straight points to win the second set 27-25.
S&T closed out Roosevelt in the third set 25-20 to complete their second sweep of the day. They recorded five of the first seven points to pick up a 5-2 lead. Midway through the third set, the Miners went out to a 15-10 lead. Roosevelt made it a three-point deficit however, the Miners held on as they won the set 25-20. A service error ended it to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Meyer and
Camden Seaver (Palatine, IL/William Friend) both led the team with nine kills. Meyer hit for .353 and Seaver recorded a .429 hitting percentage. Sallade collected six kills and
Grogan Kraus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had five with a .714 hitting percentage. Johnwick put up five blocks and three kills. Orr had 16 assists, while
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) tallied 15.
As a team, the Miners hit for .426 with 39 total kills. They held Roosevelt to a .187 hitting percentage with 31 kills and 17 attacking errors.
What's Next
Missouri S&T will be back in action on Feb. 6 against Park (Mo.) at 6 p.m. at Gibson Arena. They will face LeMoyne Owen on Feb. 7 and Central State on Feb. 8.
